The Chief of Staff will be an experienced senior leader, familiar with the changing landscape of higher education and will serve to support and expand the strategic priorities of the President. The President's staff supports the development and implementation of plans to guide the university's strategic growth and direction and is committed to ensuring academic and operational excellence and fiscal sustainability.Embarking on its third century, GW is ranked #67 among national universities by U.S News & World Report and is a member of the Association of American Universities.Key George Washington University Facts:Three Campuses: The Foggy Bottom Campus, the Mount Vernon Campus and the Virginia Science and Technology Campus.Ten schools and colleges.Located four blocks from the White House and adjacent to major government and nongovernmental agencies.Faculty: 1,166 non-medical;1,197 medical.Staff: 3,100Students: Approximately 12,000 undergraduate and 16,000 graduate students are enrolled; students come from all 50 states and 132 countries.500+ student-athletes participate in 20 intercollegiate, varsity sports at the NCAA Division I level.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESReporting directly to the President, the Chief of Staff is a key member of the executive leadership team that includes the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Chief Financial Officer, the General Counsel, the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, the Vice President for Health Affairs, the Vice President for Human Resources, the Vice President for Communications and Marketing, the Chief Administration Officer, the Athletics Director, and the Vice President for Board Relations and Secretary of the University.As Chief of Staff to the President of the university, this role:Serves as a senior advisor and strategic partner to the President.Oversees and contributes to the development of executive-level materials (briefs, correspondence, remarks, communications, presentations, reports, etc.) for the President.Supports the planning of and participates in executive-level meetings with or on behalf of the President.Facilitates the coordination of the senior leadership team to ensure implementation of Presidential and university-wide initiatives to advance institutional priorities effectively and efficiently.Develops, maintains and enhances relations with the university community by liaising among the President, the Board of Trustees, Deans, faculty, staff, students and alumni, government agencies, and the public at large, in partnership with relevant senior leadership team members.Provides guidance and advice to executive leadership team members to enhance the President's capacity and effectiveness in all areas of institutional governance.Ensures the President's time is allocated strategically and effectively.Applies an efficient and thorough process of preparation and follow-up for all meetings and events.Seeks "win-win" solutions to help foster continued integration and collaboration.Provides oversight to any other administrative programs or unit(s) as directed by the President.Represents the President, as necessary, both internally and externally. May require travel based on the President's agenda to promote the university and/or address university-related issues as they arise.Leads and/or staffs committees, task forces and work groups at the request of the President.Supports the President with external community engagement by working closely with the Development Office, Government Relations, the Provost's Office, Student Affairs and others.Provides analytical support for the President. Gathers information and completes analysis in order to prepare potential solutions and specific recommendations for the President's consideration.Anticipates potential obstacles and advises on the pulse of the community to provide support and guidance on necessary institutional outcomes.Manages and directs the administrative operations of the Office of the President, and the President's Residence to ensure efficient operations, providing oversight and management on budgeting, planning and human resources issues. Implements activities and projects as required.Supervises the President's staff members and leads collaboratively and effectively.Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.Minimum Qualifications: Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, Master's degree, or higher, in a relevant area of study preferred. Relevant experience must include at least 8 years of senior leadership/executive level experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:Preferred Qualifications: PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONSThe successful candidate will be an astute leader with high emotional intelligence and impeccable interpersonal skills. Comfort with a complex, matrixed environment with a demonstrated ability to lead through influence and teamwork is essential. Experience in, or deep knowledge of, higher education will be important to the Chief of Staff's success. As a strategic advisor and trusted confidant, the successful candidate should demonstrate mature judgment, political agility, intuitive foresight, and extraordinary communication skills.Other Necessary Qualifications and Personal Characteristics:Significant senior-level experience (preferred 10 years or more) in a similar capacity to a high-level principal in a complex, diverse, multi-cultural environment.Superior organizational skills with staff supervision and budget expertise.Superb verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate and present information to various and diverse audiences.Comfort and ease with analyzing data.Ability to meet deadlines and manage complex timelines.Evidence of exceptional judgement and decision-making skills.Demonstrated ability to handle high-level sensitive and confidential information.Ability to navigate ambiguity and manage multiple projects/initiatives with strict deadlines in a fast paced and rapidly changing environment.Evidence of working with multiple diverse constituencies in a confident and supportive manner.Unquestionable personal code of ethics, integrity, diversity and trust.Demonstrated leadership presence for internal and external environments.Commitment to GW's values: Integrity.
