Job Title Summer Recreation Counselor Starting Salary $14.00 Hourly Department Parks & Recreation Regular Hours Monday Friday 8AM to 5PM Location Davenport, FL Job Status Non-Exempt; Full-Time; Seasonal Position Function/Nature of Work: Directly responsible for assisting with the daily operational aspects of weekly summer camp sessions as well as supervising and facilitating various recreational activities and field trips for camp participants. Work is performed under the direction of the Summer Recreation Site Supervisor. This position requires work that involves, walking or sitting most of the time, and exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis. This position risks exposure to extreme heat, blood borne pathogens, human waste, bright/dim light. Essential Duties: The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the classification. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are logical assignment to the position. Ensures that camp participants are aware of rules and schedule of daily activities. Provides direct skilled leadership and supervision of other counselors and camp participants. Provides a safe and healthy environment, both physically and mentally, to ensure safe operations of a quality program. Maintains and oversees the proper use of equipment and supplies. Completes and maintains proper reports, time sheets, and provides information to other camp counselors. Enforces facility rules and regulations; takes appropriate corrective action with camp participants. Assists with planning, scheduling, and organizing enrichment opportunities for camp participants. Safeguards camp participants and provides a safe and clean working environment. Perform other non-essential duties as required. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain a positive and effective working relationship with other staff, participants, parents and/or guardians, volunteers and the general public. Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision. Ability to respond to public inquiries regarding activates and camp participants. Must be physically able to sufficiently perform the essential functions and duties of this position. Must be able to physically assist and participate in physical activities with camp participants. Ability to perform various tasks in all weather conditions and under various levels of physical exertion. Must be able to bend, stand, run and lift 25 lbs. Ability to resolve disciplinary problems as they occur in a professional manner. Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program. Knowledge and experience with camp, policies and procedures desired. Minimum Requirements/Qualifications: Currently enrolled in High school with satisfactory progress or possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent. A strong desire and ability to lead activities. Full attendance for the eight (8) week summer and attend all staff meetings, training and family events. Must be willing to learn and demonstrate a positive attitude. Persons with recreational program, camp counseling and teaching or related experience preferred. Other requirements: Must be 16 years of age or older. Must possess a valid State of Florida drivers' license or State of Florida ID. Must possess an honorable military discharge, if applicant has been service connected. Must be a United States citizen or naturalized citizen. Must pass a physical examination and drug urinalysis test. Must not have been convicted of a felony. Licenses/Certifications: N/A Comments: This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
