The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) is a political subdivision established by Chapter 1230 of the 2020 Acts of Assembly. VPRA is responsible for promoting, sustaining, and expanding the availability of passenger and commuter rail services in the Commonwealth, including all administrative and fiduciary responsibilities for Virginia's state-supported passenger rail services. The VPRA also funds Virginia Railway Express (VRE) and administers all capital expansion projects, infrastructure, and land acquisitions related to the $3.7 billion Transforming Rail in Virginia initiative, which will double Amtrak and VRE service in Virginia over the next decade. The VPRA acts as a "responsible public entity" for the acquisition, construction, improvement, maintenance, or operation, or any combination thereof, of a "qualifying transportation facility" under the Public Private Partnership Act of 1995. Job Summary VPRA has an exciting internship opportunity for students pursuing a Master's degree in Business, Engineering, Public Administration or Urban Planning from an accredited university. The accepted candidate for the position will have the opportunity to apply their academic background through both the office and field, and to gain firsthand work experience in the various aspects of Passenger Rail Operations and Planning. The employee in this role will need to establish and maintain successful working relationships with others, both inside and outside of the Authority, which may include VPRA leaders and employees, Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) leaders and employees, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) leaders and employees, Federal, State, and Local government officials, partner agencies, third-party vendors/consultants, and transportation/railroad partners (e.g. Amtrak, VRE). Responsibilities Assist in providing technical, logistical, and administrative support to ensure the successful completion of assigned projects tasks within scope, schedule, and budget Attend office meetings, field meetings, and conference calls Research, collect, and analyze data Rotate through various groups within the department and/or organization Communicate effectively and professionally with management Receive instructions on and become familiar with Operations' safety standards, work procedures, and operating practices Serves as liaison to ensure assigned aspects of customer service are promptly and efficiently coordinated Handles other work responsibilities as assigned Perform GIS mapping and analysis work Create graphics for reports and presentations Assist with grant writing and administrative tasks Assist with report writing Education and Experience Minimum Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher Preferred Current student pursuing a master's degree at an accredited educational institution Required Experience: Knowledge of customer service principles Knowledge of business management and budgetary principles Professionalism and ability to deal effectively with people Ability to present information orally and in writing Ability to manage projects and organize, prioritize, and perform time sensitive tasks Excellent written and verbal communication skills Must be highly organized Ability to work productively Detail oriented Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality Ability to work with tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment Preferred Experience : Previous transportation or railroad industry experience Specific interest or desire to work in the railroad industry Experience in Microsoft Office software suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
