Lowell School, a progressive independent school in Washington, DC, is seeking applicants for the position of Early Childhood and Primary School Counselor. The counselor is a crucial role and collaborates with classroom teachers, division heads, and the student support team to enhance the social-emotional learning and overall well-being of students. We seek candidates who are skilled in counseling support, crisis intervention, and program development and demonstrate a commitment to being highly visible. Successful candidates will have experience with family systems work and enjoy fostering and facilitating collaborative relationships between parents, teachers, and students. This role reports to the Pre-Primary (2.5-4 years) and Primary (Kindergarten-5th grade) School division directors. Qualifications: Master's degree or higher in counseling, social work, psychology, or related field 3-5 years demonstrated experience as a school counselor/psychologist Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging Experience working with early childhood and/or elementary aged children Demonstrated understanding of current social-emotional research and methodologies Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, lead initiatives, and be proactive Major Responsibilities: Observe students, meet with teachers, identify student social and emotional needs, and provide follow-up communication and planning. Meet regularly with the Primary School leadership team to support division-wide goals. Conduct and facilitate family meetings when appropriate. Provide appropriate and timely communication and follow through, including appropriate documentation. Deliver social-emotional curriculum to students in Kindergarten-5th grade. Conduct individual (and group, if needed) assessments to determine appropriate courses of action. Provide short-term crisis assessment and support for students. Collaborate on health and wellness curriculum and delivery in Pre-Primary School-5th grade. Maintain and update a comprehensive list of outside consultants and service providers; make referrals when appropriate. Maintain accurate records and ensure confidentiality of all student data according to the law and school protocols. Provide opportunities for parent engagement and education. Lowell School requires all employees to be fully vaccinated, unless you have a medical or religious exemption. Fully vaccinated includes boosters.
