The Upper School Teache r of History w ill teach four sections in the Upper School and will collaborate with colleagues to introduce and build student understanding by using course content to develop mastery of historical thinking and writing skills. Essential Duties: Teach tenth-grade US History and junior and/or senior electives Enthusiastically collaborate in interdisciplinary humanities work with the Upper School English Department Support the History Department's mission to provide each student with the opportunity to develop empathy and connect more broadly to the variety of human experience Engage students in a wide variety of student-centered learning practices to build competency in academic skills that are both discipline-specific and transferable to other areas of study Embrace and employ backward design in curriculum planning as well as collaborate in assessment development and grading practices Contribute to the growth of the department through committee work and other department-related duties Elicit individual excellence in every student, moving the student toward personal and collective goals in skills, habits of mind, and understanding Demonstrate warmth, collegiality, humor, and industry in interactions with students, colleagues, and parents Other duties as needed Essential Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in history or related discipline; advanced degree preferred At least three years of high school teaching experience; independent school experience preferred Expertise in US History with experience or interest in a non-western history field Excellent written and oral communication skills Willingness and desire to work in a collaborative environment Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to work with a variety of learning styles Willingness and desire to be an active member of a community that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion A positive attitude, a growth mindset, and a sense of humor Experience/willingness to lead at least two extracurricular and/or athletic endeavors per year This position is full-time, ten (10) months per year, exempt from overtime, and eligible for all benefits afforded to full-time Pennington School employees.
