The Charge Nurse has the responsibility to see the continuation of quality patient care in the absence of the Department Manager. She/he shall be responsible for identifying and communicating patient status changes and emergent situations to the Department Manager or designee. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Customer service to the physician, patient, family and to the staff. Keeps Department Manager or designee informed of problems, i.e. physician complaints, patient or family complaints or staff issues from shift to shift. Coordinate bed control in times of high volume, ability to assist with triaging of patients and involvement of critical care specialists if needed. To assist and set examples of positive working relations between shifts. Assist with welcoming and orientating new employees to make them feel part of the team. Liaison to assist new staff and/or pulled staff with policies and procedures, critical care issues with their patients and overall working of the unit. Work with all disciplines, i.e. Case Manager, Dietary, Pharmacy in a professional manner to resolve issues. To assign job duties for the shift and are responsible to see that it gets done. Assists Department Manager in evaluating employees within assigned areas, including interviewing prospective employees. Participates actively in committees to evaluate and improve nursing care. Has authority to act in a manner consistent with established policies of the Department of Nursing Service under the direction of the Department Manager and with consent of the Chief Nursing Officer. Responsible for the promotion of customer service. Maintaining a reasonable safe and appropriate environment for patients and employees. Effectively assesses assigned employees competence with direct patient care. Acts as patient advocate. Active participant in admission chart review and nursing care plan review and revisions. Assess staff nurse needs with admission process and completion of care plan and educate as appropriate. Patients appropriately prepared for surgery, special procedures, etc. Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Graduate of state approved school of nursing. LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION: Currently licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Missouri as a Registered Nurse EXPERIENCE: Minimum 2 years experience in related field preferred. SKILLS AND ABILITIES: CPR is not required. Excellent communication skills to interact with patients, visitors and staff. Ability to manage time and organize daily schedule to meet productivity standards. Good computer skills. Minimum typing skills of 35 W.P.M.
