St. Louis Area Foodbank (SLAFB) JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Chief Operating Officer (COO) Supervisor & Leadership Partner: President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Direct Reports: Vice President (VP) of Operations, VP of Community Impact and Innovation, Director of Product Acquisition and Repackaging FLSA: Exempt Position Summary: This is a tremendous opportunity for a mission-driven, collaborative leader, operations expert, and strategic advisor to have direct impact on positively contributing to the St. Louis Area Foodbank's vision of a nutritionally secure Missouri and Illinois. The COO will have three direct reports (two Vice Presidents and one Director) and will provide leadership and strategy to the St. Louis Area Foodbank's vibrant and talented Operations (Warehouse and Transportation), Partner Agency Services, Programs, Product Acquisition, Facilities Management, and Repackaging Volunteer Center teams. This is a critically important leadership position within the organization as the COO will: Focus on the day-to-day execution of the Foodbank's strategic goals and objectives Measure progress against those goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) Develop, implement, and evaluate the Foodbank's capacity, key work processes, and overall infrastructure to deliver outstanding services to the communities we serve in the bi-state region Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the COO will be an integral member of the Foodbank's Executive Leadership Team (ELT) along with the President and CEO, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Chief People Officer (CPO), and the Chief Development Officer (CDO). The successful candidate will bring a track record of success as an executive leader, possess operational (warehousing) depth and expertise, demonstrate emotional intelligence, champion collaboration and continuous improvement, and have the ability to effectively coach, mentor, and manage engaged and high-performing staff. The St. Louis Area Foodbank has been growing steadily during the past 10 years and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025. We are seeking to dramatically accelerate our growth, impact, and influence in the communities we serve across 26 counties in the bi-state region (Illinois and Missouri). Duties and Responsibilities: Motivate, inspire, and lead high-performance teams responsible for Operations (Warehouse and Transportation), Partner Agency Services, Programs, Product Acquisition/Food Sourcing, Facilities Management, and the Foodbank's onsite Repackaging Volunteer Center. Develop, implement, and monitor innovative and efficient operational strategies that demonstrate thoughtful planning and entrepreneurial thinking. Accountable for the creation of and effectiveness of all operational processes internal and external by ensuring the collection and preparation of statistical data capturing results, course correcting as needed as well as projecting future goals. Collaborate with the President and CEO and the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to establish and accomplish annual goals and objectives for the organization as well as assess metrics and KPI's to ensure we meet or exceed the goals and timelines of our strategic direction for the organization. Provide expert advice, guidance, and direction on business matters, including operational policies and procedures, new initiatives, and future strategic planning while fostering a success-oriented and environment of collaboration and accountability anchored in a People First culture. Work collaboratively with Executive Leadership to oversee the development and implementation of plans for program and service expansion within the framework of strategic objectives. Engineer the alignment of people, processes, policies, and assets to obtain an optimal balance between efficiency, service provision and collaboration with member agencies and other partners in addressing hunger throughout the 26 counties we serve in Missouri and Illinois. Identify and drive change initiatives that improve operations workflow and productivity. Facilitate clear, transparent, and timely communication across departments throughout the organization and the ELT to remove obstacles, improve responsiveness, and facilitate prompt decision making. Oversee research, analysis, trends and program evaluation of operations in support of strategic planning, and day-to-day problem solving. Implement and lead a continuous quality improvement process throughout all functional areas, focusing on systems/process improvement and growth. Serve as the Disaster Incident Commander, overseeing the planning and execution of disaster response operations and management of partner relationships. Participate in meetings and committees as appropriate with the Board of Directors. Leads the Operations (Warehouse, Facilities, Logistics) sub-committee. Comply with all SLAFB policies and procedures and serve as a role model for integrity and core values. Perform other duties as assigned to meet company needs. Qualifications: Must be a proven Operations leader (previous Operations Leadership experience in Warehouse and Transportation required). Minimum of 10 years senior leadership experience managing cross-functional teams and generating superior outcomes with accountability for financial results, operations, programs/projects, customer service and staff development (non-profit experience highly preferred; past Chief/Executive-level experience preferable). Bachelor's degree required. An advanced degree, preferably an MBA is a plus. Ability to interface effectively with various internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to: the Board of Directors, the ELT, the Foodbank's departmental leaders and staff, network of partner agencies, etc. Capable of managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously in a fast-paced, growth environment. Must possess agility. Food banking/food industry experience preferred. Knowledge of Ceres or other enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Robust quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills. Possess confidence, strategic thinking and mission-driven assertiveness to promote positive, accountable work culture. Ability, willingness, and sensitivity to work with diverse stakeholders. Proficiency of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Strong performance management and evaluation capabilities including willingness and experience in coaching and mentoring resulting in positive outcomes. Enthusiasm for innovation and proven ability to integrate technology to improve efficiency. Must pass pre-employment criminal background check and drug testing. Ability to influence others and foster teamwork to achieve goals. Speak on behalf of the Foodbank in the media, conferences, and public events/forums, as appropriate. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday onsite at the SLAFB facility and in the community as needed. However, flexibility will be granted as appropriate. Occasional weekend (Saturday/Sunday) or evening hours may be required. Meeting attendance may require overnight travel.
