St. Louis Area Foodbank (SLAFB) JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Supervisor and Leadership Partner: President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Direct Reports: Controller and Director of Technology Services FLSA: Exempt Position Summary: The role of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a tremendous opportunity for a mission-driven and well-rounded senior financial leader with superb strategic planning experience and strong business acumen to serve as a key member of the St. Louis Area Foodbank's Executive Leadership Team. The CFO is the organization's top financial leadership position and serves as a critical strategic business partner to the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), providing thought leadership and oversight in matters pertaining to the financial, economic, and information technology stability of the Foodbank. This individual will be responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and implementing the activities related to accounting, accounts payable/receivable, fiscal reporting, debt management, treasury functions (including cash management, investments, banking relationships, business licensing administration, risk management and insurance and purchasing), and technology services. This position creates and oversees all company financial practices, including Finance Department policies and procedures, preparation of budgets, development of financial reports and tax filings, and management of external/internal audit activities. The CFO is also responsible for facilitating the strategic planning process in partnership with the President and CEO and the Foodbank's Executive Leadership Team, with a particular focus on providing an economic and analytical viewpoint for future planning purposes. This position serves as the staff liaison for the Investment & Audit Committee supporting the Treasurer of the Board of Directors. The CFO will help drive organizational effectiveness and financial stability and technology services infrastructure to positively contribute to the St. Louis Area Foodbank's vision of a nutritionally secure Missouri and Illinois and our mission to build a stronger bi-state region by nourishing people, empowering communities, and transforming systems. The CFO will provide leadership and mentorship to the Foodbank's vibrant and talented Finance and Technology Services Departments, which consists of the CFO, Controller, Staff Accountants, Director of Technology Services, and Network and Systems Administrator. Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the CFO will be an integral member of the Foodbank's Executive Leadership Team along with the President and CEO, the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Chief People Officer (CPO), and the Chief Development Officer (CDO). The successful CFO candidate will bring a track record of success as an executive leader, possess deep and broad financial expertise, demonstrate emotional intelligence, champion collaboration and continuous improvement, and have the ability to effectively coach, mentor, and manage engaged and high-performing staff. The St. Louis Area Foodbank has been growing steadily during the past 10 years and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025. We are seeking to dramatically accelerate our growth, impact, and influence in the communities we serve across 26 counties in the bi-state region (Illinois and Missouri). Duties and Responsibilities: Plan, manage, organize, and direct activities related to organizational financial operations including budgeting, forecasting, accounting, government and financial reporting, banking relationship management, purchasing and procurement, risk management and insurance coverage, cash and debt management, and business filings. Develop financial strategies to maximize the use of financial resources. Responsible for providing leadership for the Foodbank's Technology Services/Information Technology function to drive innovation and ensure that technology strategies support and enhance mission-critical business operations. Partner with the Director of Technology Services to identify, recommend, develop, and implement cost-effective technology solutions for the Foodbank organization. Participate as a member of the Executive Leadership Team in the planning, development, and review of projects, programs, facilities, and investments considered by the Foodbank, assessing alignment of such activities with the strategic direction and the organization's financial resources. Coordinate the annual budget process incorporating strategic discussions, organizational priorities, and budget manager training. Ensure the annual budget is compiled with reasonable assumptions and includes a 3-year forecast for board and committee presentation and approval. Analyze budget variances to assess operational effectiveness and recommend changes as appropriate. Oversee the financial statement close process (monthly and annually) to ensure the accuracy of financial statements. Ensure general ledger accounts are reconciled monthly, especially for high-risk accounts such as cash, inventory and revenue. Works cross-functionally with departmental teams to further programmatic, operational and financial initiatives. Prepare and present financial updates at all Foodbank Board of Directors and Investment & Audit Committee meetings. Monitor investment portfolio performance to ensure its long-term financial health and viability to achieve the Foodbank's mission and goals. Solicit and evaluate request-for-proposals (RFP) for key vendor contracts to ensure best pricing. Coordinate the annual financial statement and federal funds audit process as well as the compilation and filing of the Form 990 with an independent audit firm. Ensure organizational compliance with all applicable local, state (Missouri and Illinois), and federal laws and filings. Oversee and monitor all Government programs for Missouri and Illinois and ensure compliance, completion and tracking of all funds received and expended. Provide coaching, training, and mentoring to team members at all levels and to all teams across the organization to support a high-performing culture. Serve as a role model for integrity and the Foodbank's core values (Stewardship, Team, Agility, and Respect). Perform other duties as assigned to meet organizational needs. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Accounting, Finance or related field required; Master's Degree a plus; CPA preferred. Minimum of 10 years of progressive, senior-level experience in financial management. Non-profit senior leadership experience as well as past Chief/Executive-level experience are highly preferred. Prior experience with providing leadership and oversight of the Technology Services/Information Technology function preferred. Demonstrated experience with long-range strategic financial and facilities planning required. Knowledge of federal grants management and regulations for non-profit organizations preferred. Food banking/food industry experience preferred. Experience and knowledge of inventory tracking and reconciliation required. (Food is our currency - and new CFO needs to play a bigger role in reconciliation) Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) as well as financial and payroll reporting software. Must pass pre-employment criminal background check and drug testing. Enthusiasm for innovation and proven ability to integrate and harness technology to improve efficiency. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday onsite at the SLAFB facility and in the community as needed. However, flexibility will be granted as appropriate. Occasional weekend (Saturday/Sunday) or evening hours may be required. Meeting attendance may require overnight travel.
