Prototype Shop Manager

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: The primary functions include supervising machinists, managing projects, interfacing with customers and engineers, and managing shop resources for the manufacture of medical devices in an ISO13485-certified Prototype shop environment that utilizes multi-axes computer numerical control (CNC) milling machines, lathes, and wire EDM. Includes forecasting shop operations, expenditures, and workflow. Will plan and produce prototype products and instrumentation for both internal engineering groups and external customers. Detailed planning of shop orders with ability to manage delivery dates. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the Major Responsibilities, including the following: Hands-on leader with proficiency in CNC machining methods, programming, part finishing, and shop order execution. Responsible for quoting new projects and builds. Includes identifying costs of goods, equipment usage, labor expense, and scheduling conflicts to satisfy engineers and customers' requirements. Responsible for delivering high quality parts for use in medical applications by ensuring that the machinists are using and understands the quality requirements for each product. Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product. Responsible for following cGMP and GDP in FDA-regulated manufacturing environment. Collaborates with engineering teams and project managers to schedule and deliver prototypes and products on-time. Demonstrates focus on continuous improvement including developing and revising standard operational and working practices and observing workers to ensure compliance with standards. Demonstrates leadership-style that creates and maintains a positive and innovative culture. Extensive experience with Design for Manufacturing / Inspection / Assembly and communication with engineering team and customers. Ability to use shop management software to track KPI's and report shop performance on a weekly and monthly basis. Manage and track equipment and preventive maintenance activities. Manage operations related to TIG, MicroTig, Laser welding as well as secondary operations including passivation, cleaning, ti-anodize, heat treat, and lasermarking. Primary interface with internal quality group during internal and external audits. Responsible for daily contact with assigned team. Responsible for maintaining prototype builds, quality controls, and safety standards. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet schedules. Responsible for keeping customers informed of any delays. Identifies training needs and takes a hands-on approach to address the need. Keeps machinists informed and maintains positive communication flow. Ensures cross training of team, as necessary. Performs required performance evaluations and disciplinary interviews in a timely manner. Ensures that employees adhere to company policies and maintain good work habits. Documents personnel issues and consults with Human Resources, as necessary. Responsible for the safety of the machinists. Communicates safe work practices and enforces safety rules. Proactive in identifying unsafe conditions and interceding on behalf of the team. Carries out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; working in part with Business Unit Manager on performance management and working in part with Human Resources in employee relations. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Associate degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school. Previous experience operating CNC equipment or managing a CNC equipment department. Must have experience supervising and managing machinists and employees in a machine shop environment. Must have more than five years work related experience. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, routers, and inspections procedures. Ability to read and interpret blueprints including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5. MS Office software,. OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrates mechanical aptitude. Understand the operation of measuring equipment such as CMM, micrometers, calipers, surface plate, and optical comparators.
