YMCA Storer Camps is located near Jackson, MI on 1200 acres surrounding Stony Lake. General Function: The Barn Manager reports directly to the Equestrian Director. The incumbent is responsible for carrying out the following functions keeping with the Goals and Mission of YMCA Storer Camps. Conduct trail rides, lessons, horse sense classes, pony rides, arena rides, grooming activities, etc. in a fun and safe manner according to our policies Feed and care for horse herd (and other animals) according to instructions Care for facilities and grounds Repair and maintain equipment Supervise hourly equestrian staff, seasonal equestrian staff and equestrian volunteers Complete daily checklists including feed and medication records and ride activity Develop new ideas to upgrade the equestrian program Know How: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to work well alone and with others. Good judgment is vital, especially concerning the safety of our guests, staff, and animals. This person needs a strong work ethic and must be responsible. They need to be personable and able to deal with a frightened child or an irate parent. It is a physically demanding job. They need to be able to work a full (40 hours) week, but have the flexibility to work weekends or evenings as necessary. They will be working outside all day in all kinds of weather, able to routinely lift 75 lbs. and be comfortable around horses and other barn animals and have knowledge of care for these animals. Ability to teach about or ride different animals is a must, this includes advanced riding skills on horses. They must be able to communicate instructions in a fun yet informative manner. They need to be a team player that can work within the YMCA Storer Camps structure. They must be at least 21 years old and current in CPR and first aid for children (or willing to obtain certification within the first 90 days of employment). Job Segments: Along with the Equestrian Director, assist in the development, implementation and supervision of YMCA Storer Camps equine programs. Supervise assigned staff (North, Ranch, Small Animal Barn) and volunteers. Assist Equestrian Director in working with camp veterinarian, feed representative, farriers and maintenance staff to provide suitable care for the entire herd. Feed horses and other animals according to the feed sheets. Note any changes on the feed sheets. Conduct horse sense classes, trail rides, arena rides, grooming activities, pony rides, etc. for our guests during the school year. Teach riding lessons and conduct trail rides for our summer guests. Disperse and collect rider feedback surveys. Implement and maintain safety standards. Assist Equestrian Director with updating and maintaining the Policy and Procedures Handbook. Responsible for basic health checks and medications for horses. Assist Equestrian Director with selecting, purchasing, selling, and leasing out suitable horses for the equestrian program. Attend and assist with regular Equestrian Department meetings. Assist with the development and implementation of a tiered (beginner to advanced) riding lesson program. Monitor program for quality care of horses, equipment, and facility. Make improvements and enforce adopted standards. Assist in facility and equipment upkeep (routine clearing, repair, inventorying of equipment and supplies, fencing, burring, barn cleaning and end of day procedures). Maintain records on horse health, feed, training, riding, and medication. Work according to the mission and four core values of YMCA Storer Camps. Perform regular tack checks, fittings and changes, cleaning, oiling and repairs. Train horses according to our standards and work with program horses to keep them fresh. Maintain accurate horse training logs. Communicate openly and positively with other barn staff, program staff and program directors. Assist with horse transportation. Follow standards set by the YMCA Storer Camp and licensing agencies. Understand and implement standards set by the American Camp Association and state licensing regulations. Participate in the YMCA 's Annual Campaign. Other duties as assigned by supervisor . Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
