Philadelphia FIGHT Dental Assistant Job Description Hours: M-F 9:00 to 5:00 Department: Dental Services Home base: Dental Clinic Supervisor: Dental Administrator Full-Time, 40 hours per week; Non-exempt Philadelphia FIGHT is an AIDS Service Organization that recently became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). We have been providing primary care for people living with HIV/AIDS and those at very high risk since 1990. Our program provides a team-centered, multi-disciplinary approach that in addition to clinical care offers access to behavioral health and substance abuse services, a wide range of educational programs, HIV counselling and testing, and youth programs. Philadelphia FIGHT Family Dentistry provides culturally competent, non-judgmental, high quality dental care to both adult and pediatric patients regardless of the ability to pay. The Dental Assistant improves dental care delivery by preparing treatment rooms, patients, instruments, and materials, and assisting in other general dental office responsibilities as needed. Job Responsibilities Dental Assistant Responsibilities: Prepares treatment room for patient by following prescribed procedures and protocols. Prepares patient for dental treatment by welcoming, comforting, seating, and draping patient. Provides information to patients by answering questions and requests. Provides materials by selecting, mixing, and placing materials on instruments and in the patient's mouth. Provides diagnostic information by exposing and developing radiographic studies; pouring, trimming, and polishing study casts. Maintains patient appearance and ability to masticate by fabricating temporary restorations; cleaning and polishing removable appliances. Documents dental care services by charting in patient records. Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed. Manages patient flow including triaging of urgent care patients. Provides oral health education and oral hygiene instructions. Understands when to escalate clinical situation to dentist/dental hygienist and/or supervisor. General Responsibilities: Maintains patient confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential. Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols. Demonstrates in person and telephone courtesy. Uses sound judgment in patient communication. Understands basics of how to de-escalate situations with upset patients, and when to escalate calls to supervisors. Team Functions: Works in compliance with all medical policies and with standards such as OSHA, HIPAA, CLIA and funding body regulations. Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by supervisor or manager. Exercises good judgment in bringing any issues necessary to the attention of the supervisor, Dental Director, or Chief Dental Officer. Constantly strives to achieve excellence in the day-to-day operations. Qualifications CPR certification X-ray certification for the state of Pennsylvania Prefer 1+ years' of experience as a dental assistant Demonstrate the ability to understand the overall purpose of clinical care and importance of support staff Must be able to demonstrate judgment, patience, integrity, organization, and prioritization in multi-task environment Needs to have attention to detail, dependability, listening and communication skills, and flexibility Must have cultural competency and take a trauma-informed and harm-reduction approach to health care Needs to be competent in the use of Electronic Health Record systems Other Initial probationary period is three months. Physical Demands: Occasional lifting of 40 - 50 lbs and pushing of 5-20 lbs Sitting, standing and walking approximately 80% of the time A medium to high level of manual dexterity required Bending and reaching approximately 20% of the time Normal accessibility and mobility required Normal overtime/extended work hours Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure - Category 1 Job classification includes ALL employees who have occupational exposure* to blood borne pathogens* (blood or body fluids) while performing their job duties. FIGHT requires proof of successful completion of COVID-19 Vaccination series for all new employees.
