( Video ) Summer Camp Instructor Position Overview Seasonal Summer Camp Instructors are responsible for providing a variety of unique learning opportunities during an intensive eight-week youth Summer Camp program. You'll assume the role of AHS ambassador as you guide youth ages 5-17 through a variety of weeklong day camp program modules. You are responsible for the safety, well-being, and engagement of AHS Summer Camp children through facilitation of interpretive education programs. You must be comfortable working independently, in small group settings, and as part of a larger team to implement classroom curriculum and must handle and present live animals, including snakes and invertebrates. All Summer Camp Instructors will work cooperatively with volunteer Junior Camp Counselors, and other departments to create a successful summer camp experience. Camps (including prep times) run weekdays from 6:45 AM - 4:45 PM, with Instructors averaging 35 hours per week. Morning and afternoon shifts will be required. Mandatory Camp training May 30th - June 2nd (evenings) Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Essential Functions Provide high quality group management, supervision, behavior management, and create a safe and welcoming social and learning environment for youth ages 5-17 Maintain a high-energy level and retain an enthusiastic approach to providing experiences for children while facilitating a repetitive curriculum Effectively execute summer camp inquiry-based curriculum for children including daily transitional activities like song and games, and reflection activities to ensure processing of curriculum content Facilitate scheduled mission-driven programs using a variety of animals, technology, and art media Effectively draw and retain students through enthusiastic teaching, skills, and patience Communicate effectively with campers and coworkers Speak confidently and with clarity when communicating with camper caregivers Adhere to teaching standards and safety regulations as established by AHS and the Education and Outreach department Provide conflict resolution techniques for students in a safe and healthy environment Prepare daily activities and set up teaching spaces, including classrooms, labs, and lunch spaces Follow strict sanitation protocols including wiping down surfaces, sweeping floors, resetting tables and chairs, and enforcing frequent handwashing Possess general knowledge of animals, both domestic and wild, and a strong desire to increase knowledge in these areas Gain in-depth knowledge of AHS' mission and goals to communicate to program participants Assist with cleaning and maintenance of all education animal enclosures and equipment Work with a variety of demographics throughout the community to deliver offered programs Meet and exceed each customer's expectation with excellent service Other duties as assigned. Qualifications One or more years of combined experience working with children in a formal education, natural science, or environmental education setting Experience presenting thematically based interpretive programs or classes to audience of all ages Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects with high energy and creative problem-solving skills Excellent public speaking and presentation skills and the ability to learn, understand, and communicate science and animal welfare concepts to youth Personable, responsible, and energetic, with the ability to initiate discussions and effectively communicate with all age levels through good listening skills, friendliness, enthusiasm, positive attitude and humor Ability to constantly evaluate an audience and tailor the program to provide information and entertainment at an appropriate age level Ability to use positive techniques to manage disruptions among youth Capacity to work independently in a fast-paced environment Experience with public speaking Customer service experience required Familiarity with animal care and proper handling techniques Flexibility in dealing with program delivery and changes in deadlines and operation protocol Access to reliable transportation and the ability to work a flexible schedule Must be able to handle animals safely and humanely in all conditions Education / Certifications / Licenses: High school diploma/GED Ability to obtain a fingerprint clearance card Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: Language - Able to speak, read, write and understand English. Spanish language helpful. Mathematical - Basic math skills. Technical - Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook; able to learn other software programs as necessary. Other: Regular attendance, punctuality and access to reliable transportation to drive to Arizona Humane Society South Mountain Campus is required. Ability to work on a flexible schedule to accommodate early mornings and afternoons. Work Environment / Physical Demands: The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. There may be occasional wet floors, animal noises, odors, and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical temperature controlled classroom environment.
