Summary of Responsibilities The Mental Health Officer (MHO) will interview defendants with mental health issues and determine the best treatment plans by coordinating services and connecting clients with resources through state and local agencies. The MHO will work closely with the courts, county offices and attorneys regarding the status of defendants on the mental health caseload. The employee in this position will be responsible for monitoring caseloads and maintaining records related to all defendants on the mental health caseload. Identify defendants with mental health conditions by reviewing information from law enforcement, magistrates, and case files, interviewing defendants, and consulting with mental health professionals Develop and implement protocol for placement of defendants on mental health caseload, prioritize defendants who can achieve positive outcomes through participation, and defendants who have the highest levels of mental health needs Develop and schedule treatment plans by collaborating with local and state agencies and other providers Determine what services and placement options are available for defendants Track defendants through weekly or other regularly scheduled check-in Ensure defendants are taking required medication by following up with defendants and medical professionals Notify attorneys of updates or changes regarding client's case Maintain communication with county offices and courts regarding mental health status of defendants, case status, and court dates Work with local magistrates and mental health agencies to ensure compliance with current law and county policies Attend all relevant court sessions or hearings Performs other duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with defendants, judges, attorneys, mental health service providers, and state and local agencies Ability to make decisions in accordance with state laws and regulations Ability to implement departmental policies and procedures Ability to maintain accurate case documentation Skilled in operating computers and other office machines Possess interviewing skills Ability to organize a must Ability to maintain professionalism under stress Minimum Qualifications Four-year degree in Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice or related field from an accredited college or university (May substitute experience for degree) Experience in the legal or criminal justice field preferred Professional dress required when entering courtroom; business casual daily Valid driver's license Must complete TCIC/NCIC Certification within 6 months of hire Pre-Employment Requirements Physical required _____ Yes __ X __ NoDrug test required _____ Yes __ X_ _ NoBackground check required __X__ Yes _____ No
