Grand Traverse County is experiencing continual growth to which the individual we are seeking will be first-hand in History in the making with Design and Projects at the Road Commission. YOU will make a difference in our community and be part of the mission to update and maintain a safe and efficient road system. We are currently looking to fill the role of an additional Assistant County Highway Engineer . The Engineer will supervise surveys, plan drafting, design and create specifications for road construction projects. We are looking for someone who not only enjoys the design phase of construction but also being out on site working with the contractors and crew. This position will work with the Finance Manager and conduct the Asset Management Plans. This role will work with the Road Commission's Engineering Manager and Department to determine and schedule construction projects. The department currently has a County Highway Engineer and an Assistant County Highway Engineer. Growth within the County and demand for projects has positioned the Road Commission to bring another Engineer on board. This role also prepares cost estimates of road project cost and local roads for township officials and other partners. The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or the equivalent. Eight or more years of road design and construction management experience and a PE (Professional Engineer) license in Michigan (or achieving the certification within 2 years of hire) are required for the position.. GIS experience and application a plus. A successful candidate will enjoy both time working in the office but also out at job sites no matter the weather or conditions. A good sense of humor and ability to be a team player is desired. Knowledge of the laws and regulations around Road Commissions and road construction is desired. Our work environment is connected and a good sense of humor and ability to be a team player is desired. This job may have non-traditional hours working with contractors and at construction sites in the evenings and/or weekends as needed. The Grand Traverse County roadway system is comprised of 255 primary, 763 local and 227 State miles of road. The Road Commission is an updated facility built in 2001 that features 6,000 sq. ft. of administrative offices (many of them recently constructed), 15,800 sq. ft. of equipment storage, 10,000 T salt storage barn and a MDEQ/EPA approved fueling depot.
