The South Carolina Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Job Summary: Length of Assignment: April 1 through September 5, 2023 This position is designed to be an ambassador for the Aquarium through a variety of on-site and off-site educational programs. Duties include participating in offsite outreaches, member programs, supporting daily education and interpretive programs and engaging with guests. Essential Functions: Adhere to the South Carolina Aquarium Policies Provide an exceptional visitor experience for all guests Engage guests through daily shows, guided tours, and gallery interpretation Participate in outreach programs Assist in member and community programs SCA 1st Responder Other duties as required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Outstanding interpretive skills Ability to work with audiences of all ages Must be able to give interpretive talks to groups of 10-200 people Skills needed to combine creativity, enthusiasm, and exemplary teaching methods to engage visitors in science related activities Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal Must be a team player and self-motivated Ability to maintain a sense of humor Must be able to handle live animals Professional image required Must have a working knowledge of Aquarium exhibits and animals Ability to work weekends and evenings Education and Experience Required: Prefer some experience in a related field with demonstrated teamwork and interpretive skills Licenses and Certifications Required: Valid Driver's License First Aid, CPR, and AED - Required to either possess or obtain prior to start date Supervision of others: N/A Physical Requirements: Often standing, carrying up to 50 lb and driving, sitting; average walking, bending, stooping, crouching, climbing ladders, kneeling, balancing, pushing and pulling, crawling, computer and phone tasks. Working Conditions: Normal office environment, public contact, rotating shifts, weekends and required to wear a radio; outdoor work required. *** The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by people assigned to this classification.
