The Stony Brook School seeks a full-time On Site Mechanic to support our Facilities Department. Reporting to the Director of Facilities. As a member of the maintenance team you will be responsible for hands-on MEP and HVAC campus installations and repairs. The Stony Brook School is an independent college preparatory school (grades 7-12) that resides on 55 acres in Stony Brook, NY. Campus assets include 16 institutional buildings, 31 single family dwellings, seven dormitories with 200+ beds and 15 employee apartments, a motor pool of 20+ vehicles consisting of cars, trucks and multi-functional vans, and various athletic venues. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: Identifying and resolving Maintenance Issues. Removing and installing HVAC systems and meeting local HVAC codes. Running pipes and duct systems through homes. Reading and interpreting wiring diagrams. Diagnose, address and repair maintenance equipment. Responding to and completing resident or supervisor maintenance requests and assigned Work Orders. As appropriate, logging issues into the Work Order system for action by others. In the case of after-hours emergencies he/she shall assume the lead for all facilities related issues, making appropriate phone calls or assembling the resources necessary to address the issue at hand. Complete larger ongoing projects during off-hours when the campus venues are unoccupied. Examples of this might include painting, carpentry, or remodeling projects which are addressed after classroom hours, or on weekends. Communicate effectively and respectfully with all levels of management and staff. Positive, friendly attitude with a customer service mentality. Always maintain the highest level of professionalism and adhere to strict safety guidelines. Must be flexible to understand that job duties and priorities may change and adapt accordingly. Frequent interaction with people. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS HVAC technician skills and qualifications required. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills with strong motivation to serve a community of faculty, staff and students. Mechanical and troubleshooting skills. HVAC and plumbing certified highly preferred. EPA certified. General plumbing skills. High School Diploma or equivalent. Clean driver's license. Previous hands-on experience as Facilities Mechanic, including but not limited to: hands-on carpentry and construction skills, sheet-rocking, painting, concrete work, window repair, hardware, exterior grounds, machinery and equipment maintenance, etc. Expert diagnostic skills and critical thinking are key in this line of work to effectively diagnose issues and develop effective solutions. Expertise in a variety of systems, equipment and tools. This position requires occasional travel by car within a 20 mile radius for 20% of the time. Lifting, bending and walking are required 80% of the time. This job can be physically demanding, requiring climbing on ladders, squeezing in tight spaces and carrying heavy objects. Additional Details: This position is scheduled for 40 hours per week. The schedule will include late afternoon, evenings and some Saturday hours. Daily schedule will require some flexibility.
