The Assistant Director of Residential Life is an integral part of the campus student affairs program. The Assistant Director lives on campus and has primary responsibility for the supervision of two full time Hall Directors and the overall supervision of the Resident Assistant (RA) staff. In particular, the Assistant Director will hire, supervise, evaluate, and implement staff training and development activities for 47 RAs and four professional staff. The Assistant Director will take a departmental leadership role in strengthening connections to the academic learning community, creating and supporting learning opportunities around diversity and inclusion, and providing support for RA programming. Oversee and/or support residential life administrative functions; serve in an on-call role on a rotating basis; and participate in other all campus committee assignments. The Assistant Director reports to and works closely with the Director in all phases of the operation. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities: Supervise, select, train and evaluate the Residence Life Coordinator This includes regular supervision and overall support for RLC staff. Administer the Resident Assistant Program, with staff selection, training, and development as the primary responsibility. This includes: coordinating fall, spring and in-service training workshops and local conference activities for RA/Head RAs; planning and conducting staff evaluation; conducting staff meetings, coordinating the selection process for all RA staff positions. Counsel RAs and students about personal, multicultural, social and educational matters and other concerns associated with the Residential Life Program. Provide direction and support for student learning through programs and activities sponsored by the residence life staff, in collaboration with colleagues across campus, including faculty colleagues. Work closely with Residence Life Coordinators to assess needs and creatively and collaboratively set and meet departmental programing goals. Evaluate success of programming efforts. Lead and support departmental work which reaches toward our aspiration of being a fully inclusive, living-learning community. Engage RLC s and RAs in proactive, intentional supervision to develop individual intercultural competency and focus on increasing operational effectiveness and responsiveness relating to matters of diversity and identity. Grow the connectivity between the work of RLC s and RAs and other areas of the division and college, including but not limited to Student Engagement and Leadership, and Diversity & Inclusion. Engage faculty colleagues to connect residential learning to academic learning activities. Serve as a judicial hearing officer with occasional responsibility as a case presenter to the campus judicial board. Administer specific housing programs, including refrigerator rental program and student storage operation. Provide support for student worker/office efficiency. Participate in all facets of the Residential Life program including, but not limited to, developing relationships with physical plant and security, coordinating the on campus aspects of the summer conference operations, selection and supervision of summer work team, work with special interest houses (small living learning communities) and occasional roommate mediation activities. Live on campus and give time and assistance to residents as appropriate. While this position carries no specific residential responsibilities, the person is expected to become an active member of the community. Communicate with the Director of Residential Life on an ongoing basis with regard to current residential life and campus issues and immediately with regard to critical or emergency situations. As a member of the Dean of Students staff, participates in assigned student services functions and programs, and professional development activities. Participate in the campus on call duty rotation with other student affairs staff members. Serve on divisional and all campus committees which currently include the Student Concerns Committee and the Sustainability Committee and be involved with residence life proposals and projects as necessary. Other similarly related responsibilities as required or assigned. Credentials and Experience: Master's degree in Student Personnel or Counseling, or related field, preferred . 3 -5 years r esidence life experience is required ; demonstrated leadership in a college or university setting required.
