Position The Middle Market Underwriting department has an immediate opening for someone who can demonstrate the WCF values to join their team as the VP, Middle Market Underwriting . This is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the SVP, Middle Market Strategic Business Unit. The person in this position may work from any of WCF's offices including Boise, Idaho, Denver, Colorado, Sacramento, California, or Sandy, Utah. Preference will be given to qualified candidates in or willing to relocate to the Salt Lake City/Sandy, Utah area. Responsibilities Oversee and develop underwriting teams to achieve department and company initiatives and strategy. Attract and retain quality business to achieve loss, retention, profit, growth, and combined ration targets. Develop and implement short and long-term underwriting strategies to effectively position products, programs, and services of the middle market strategic business unit. Oversee the establishment and execution of underwriting guidelines, procedures, policies, and an audit process to ensure quality, integrity, diligence, and sound pricing by the underwriting teams. Underwrite middle market accounts and approve accounts exceeding Director and underwriter authority. Provide leadership and strategic vision for all WCF middle market underwriting employees. Analyze data to understand trends and lead in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the large commercial underwriting programs, metrics, processes, results, and initiatives. Regularly meet with agents and policyholders to build and solidify good relationships and delivery of excellent customer service. Actively engage in new product development. Work with SBU's, IT, shared services, product, sales and other functions to prioritize execution and coordination of business unit projects. Responsible for achieving company underwriting growth and profit goals. Oversee and develop employees to create job satisfaction, high morale, and technical competency. Create and maintain strong positive working relationships with other departments to achieve company goals. Establish and maintain excellent relationships with key business contacts, including policyholders, insurance agencies, industry colleagues and competitors, business and labor leaders, and others who work with WCF. Oversee the middle market commercial underwriting operating budget and effectively manage expenses and resources within budget guidelines. Develop and influence the creation of a positive, customer-focused, innovative company culture. Act as a resource through participation in RIMS, APCIA, NCCI, CWCI, and other professional organizations. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in business or a related field; Master's degree or CPCU designation strongly preferred. At least ten years of commercial lines underwriting insurance experience; agent facing experience preferred. At least three years in a corporate officer-level position. Excellent knowledge and understanding of state and NCCI workers compensation manuals, ISO manuals and rating, state statutes, guidelines, rating elements, and the competitive landscape. Thorough knowledge and proficiency in underwriting coverages, products, insurance company operations, and finance. Experience with company filings, regulatory compliance, and excess reinsurance coverage placement. Exceptional communication, presentation, critical thinking, analytical, and technical skills. Excellent leadership skills, relationship-building skills, and strategic vision . Team-player mindset and willingness to collaborate. WCF Insurance offers an extensive compensation package, including a base in the range of $140,00-$260,000 and a bonus on top of base depending on performance. Salary is dependent of experience, education, and location. Benefits include Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance, company paid life insurance, 401K with a Generous 6% employer match and additional benefits such as an Employee Assistance Program and time off to volunteer. All employees earn 4 weeks of vacation their first year. An internal candidate should have six months in their current position, acceptable job performance, and must notify their current supervisor that they have applied for the position.
