Position: Postdoctoral Fellow - Sara Cooper Lab Position Type: Part-Time INSTITUTE OVERVIEW The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is a non-profit organization with the mission to use biotechnology and basic biological research to make important discoveries, improve human health, stimulate economic development, inspire young people to seek careers in science and teach members of the public the importance of science in their everyday lives. Located in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Alabama, one of the world's leading science and technology parks, HudsonAlpha's campus contains state-of-the-art laboratories for biological research and development, as well as education, in the areas of genomics, genetics and personalized medicine. HudsonAlpha fosters a collaborative environment focused on using team science to address the challenges facing our world. LABORATORY OVERVIEW Dr. Sara Cooper's lab is primarily focused on the application of genomic technology to understand and predict therapeutic response in ovarian and pancreatic cancers. Her interests extend to the application of genomics to the understanding of the role of gene regulation in therapeutic response and normal cellular biology. Dr. Cooper collaborates closely with Dr. Richard Myers, director of the Institute, and with a variety of clinical colleagues. A recently completed screen for pancreatic drug resistance genes using CRISPR technology has generated a dataset ripe for follow-up. We are seeking a creative post-doctoral fellow with experience in the generation and/or analysis of large genomic datasets. The ideal candidate is highly motivated and independent and will have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing projects taking advantage of the unique environment and resources at HudsonAlpha. See: http://hudsonalpha.org/faculty/sara-cooper DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to work in a collaborative, team science environment to design, implement and interpret original research in human genetics and genomics with a focus on cancer genomics. The successful candidate(s) will have access to state-of-the-art genomic technologies and infrastructure, shared support services, a wide variety of clinical and basic biology problems, and deep and broad expertise in applying these approaches to understand human health and disease. The fellow(s) will design and conduct original research project under the guidance of Dr. Cooper. Candidates with experience in wet-lab, dry-lab, or both will be considered. In addition, the successful candidate(s) will: Exhibit genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for discovery-based research Prepare manuscripts and co-author papers for publication in high-quality journals Present findings to the scientific community Work with research staff in the Cooper and Myers labs Help ensure that the research methods and projects are of the highest scientific standards of integrity, quality and confidence MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS PhD and/or MD degree from accredited institution in life sciences, biostatistics, or related field Research experience in genetics and genomics, including either wet-lab or data analysis skills, or, possibly, a combination of both A track record of high quality research work as evidenced by publications and/or examples of work under review for publication Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a highly collaborative environment Experience developing and using research methodology and analysis, as well as ability to interpret laboratory results and provide conclusions Physical Demands/Environmental Factors/Mental Functions ADA Requirements The physical demands, work environment factors, and mental functions described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function of this job. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be able to travel Mental Functions Continuous mental and visual attention, requiring sustained attention and observation. Excellent fine motor skills and hand control in order to pipette accurately. Ability to sustain focus during research procedures (to maintain protocol such as order of operations). Ability to visually observe results and record outcomes on lab logs and/or PC. Basic computer skills are required. Extensive documentation skills, good attention to detail, and exceptional organizational skills are required. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in the English language. Requires the ability to adapt to change efficiently. Ability to independently lead and conduct research, and to evaluate, interpret and present complex scientific data. Capacity to work productively within functionally diverse teams as well as collaborate with external investigators and partners in academic and industrial settings. Ability to prioritize issues and use sound judgment to recognize when additional consultation and/or help is needed. Comfortable working on multiple projects at one time. Strong logical thinking and deduction skills. Ability to effectively present ideas and information in a variety of formats to a wide range of audiences. Positive, flexible, and professional attitude.
