Located in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Alabama, one of the world's leading science and technology parks, HudsonAlpha's Biotech Campus contains non-profit laboratories for genetics and genomics research, resident biotech associate companies, and educational outreach and workforce development to benefit advances in human health and agriculture.HudsonAlpha Wiregrass is the expansion of HudsonAlpha's unique model into Alabama's wiregrass region, one of the world's leading agricultural producers. HudsonAlpha Wiregrass combines the Institute's mission to improve the human condition through educating the future scientific workforce, sparking economic growth and researching new discoveries for human advancement with the Wiregrass region's historic agriculture economy. DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The Economic Development department's mission is to foster an environment conducive to successful start- ups and the transition of products and services to the market. This department is responsible for the recruitment, relocation, and expansion of start-up, early stage, and established biotech companies and the talent for the workforce for these companies. In addition to the work involving biotech companies, the Economic Development department works externally through governmental affairs (local, regional, and national), economic affairs, community relations, and activities promoting growth of the synergistic cluster of biotechnology talent on the HudsonAlpha Biotech Campus, across North Alabama and throughout the Wiregrass region. POSITION SUMMARY This Economic Development Associate will report to the Vice President of Economic Development and work closely with the Director of HudsonAlpha Wiregrass to advance the work of this mission area and the Institute as a whole. This position is located in Dothan, Alabama as part of HudsonAlpha Wiregrass. JOB SPECIFIC TASKS Duties may include: Coordinating Economic Development department efforts and activities for HudsonAlpha Wiregrass Serving as a liaison between the Economic Development department team in Huntsville and the HudsonAlpha Wiregrass team in Dothan. Promoting economic growth through the attraction of agtech companies to the Wiregrass region Identifying prospects through relationships and networks Monitoring regional and national competitive activity relating to agriculture and agtech companies Assisting with operational aspects of the Economic Development department in Dothan Ensuring quality and timely communications between the Economic Development department and various stakeholders within the Wiregrass region. Assisting as a point of contact for economic development opportunities. Working with the Economic Development team (Huntsville and Dothan) to execute strategy for success in recruitment and retention of agtech companies. Generating monthly reports for department review regarding progress of the economic development efforts in the Wiregrass region. EDUCATION AND REQUIRED SKILLS EXPERIENCE Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Communication, Public Administration, Planning or closely related field. Self-motivated, knowledgeable person with three years experience in a leadership position relating to economic development or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Relevant areas of experience include but are not limited to technology-based economic development, economic development financing, public financing programs, marketing, real estate development, urban and regional planning. Required Skills: Discretion and the ability to manage confidential information. Ability to interact professionally with economic development and community leaders, industry representatives, government officials, and the public. Experience in the agriculture or life science industry is greatly preferred. Demonstrable track record of accuracy and efficiency in work output. Constant moving during hosted events. Frequently position self (e.g. stoop, crouch, crawl, bend) and pull and push to maintain computers and audio/visual equipment in the classroom/laboratory. Must be able to transport materials required for various experiences. This includes lifting and moving up to 25 pounds of materials (e.g. small stacks of textbooks or media equipment) between classrooms/laboratories and to and from parking lots and buildings. Frequent operation of common office equipment (e.g. computers, mobile devices, calculators, copiers, scanners). Frequently move around a classroom or HudsonAlpha campus to monitor guests of HudsonAlpha. Vision abilities - close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust/focus. Occasional air/car travel for meetings, conferences, or other activities which may require overnight stay(s). Environmental Factors Moderate noise level (i.e. business office with computers, phones, and printers, light traffic). Workspace is generally an indoor office setting and in other common areas throughout HudsonAlpha with controlled temperature conditions. Occasional exposure to outdoor environment during portions of the workday including extreme cold or hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions. Prolonged and irregular working hours, which include early morning and/or evening hours, as business dictates Mental Functions Maintain emotional control under stress. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in the English language.
