Summary American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking 2 Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) Members to contribute to a variety of historic preservation projects alongside Bandelier National Monument maintenance staff. These opportunities are intended for enthusiastic individuals who possess an interest in gaining experience in the field of historic preservation. No background or previous experience in construction or historic preservation required. Training for all tools and activities will be provided by park staff professionals. Start Date: 6/5/2023 (may be flexible) Estimated End Date: 12/3/2023 (or 26 weeks after start date) *a 26-week minimum commitment is required * Location Details/Description: Bandelier National Monument protects over 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back over 11,000 years. Petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities. Bandelier National Monument and its surrounding region holds intact, one of the largest densities of culturally significant resources to those of Modern Day Pueblos. Most notably San Ildefonso and Cochiti Pueblos whose proximity and use of this region closely connects them to this ancestral home. The Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) and Manhattan Project Museum which are located within 30 minute drives from Bandelier National Monument also provide for unique perspectives. Position Overview: TTAP members will work on a variety of different projects over the course of the term, including but not limited to, masonry, carpentry, graffiti mitigation, stabilization of archeological sites and historic structures, including an ancient 400-room pueblo. Members may also work on more recent historic structures, including many front-country buildings built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Participants will work alongside National Park Service Staff who are experts in various fields. Participants will also be a part of a full cultural immersion touching specifically on the interest of the selected participant. This program also includes visits to museums and other institutions that reflect the culture and history of the region and hold various world renowned collections relevant to Bandelier National Monument and the surrounding region. This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups. Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm (may be subject to change) Position Benefits Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $720/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Housing: Park housing may be provided for ACE Members located outside of the commuting area or for whom commuting is impractical. Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include OSHA Certification and Historic Preservation Fundamentals courses. Qualifications Required: Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group. A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of ID's upon hiring) Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check. Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term. ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation. Preferred: Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a high school diploma and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as construction trades, use of hand and power tools. Knowledge of one or more trade practices, such as masonry, carpentry, roofing, mechanics, and/or painting. Familiarity with construction and craftsmanship. Basic familiarity with common factors in deterioration of buildings and structures. Ability and willingness to use and care for common hand tools and portable or stationary power tools associated with the trade (e.g., hammers, saws, drills, planers, etc.) Deep interest in preserving history. A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation. Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions: Physical Demands : Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, and communicating with team members. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch. Ability to hike over rough terrain. Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus. Weight Lifted or Force Exerted : ability to move and/or lift up to 50 pounds. Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in temperatures ranging from 30 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Noise Environment : Moderate to high noise such as gas-powered chainsaws and other hand and power tools. Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources. Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the NPS or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the NPS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the NPS, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to NPS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
