Resource Description Coordinator IUPUI University Library Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library (UL) is seeking a Resource Description Coordinator who reports to the Head of Resource Acquisition & Description Team. The Description Coordinator manages the distribution of cataloging and metadata work among Resource Acquisition & Description Associates and functions as the point of contact for all cataloging questions. They perform original cataloging, serials cataloging, and other cataloging and metadata duties as assigned.IUPUI's goal is to create an academic community, rich with intellectual, cultural and social diversity. Duties: The successful candidate will ensure complete, accurate, timely, and cost-effective bibliographic access to all library holdings, be they traditional or nontraditional. The Description Coordinator supervises 3 full-time employees and has primary responsibility for description and coordination of description workflows for cataloging and digital collections metadata, including distribution of digital collections metadata creation across departments.Serving as the primary point of contact for library staff for any issues, questions, or guidance regarding cataloging and digital collections metadata, the Description Coordinator makes decisions regarding appropriate cataloging and digital collections metadata practice, setting and documenting procedures. They also develop and/or coordinate necessary description training for Resource Acquisition & Description Associates and others engaged in metadata creation.The Description Coordinator collaborates with others in the Library to establish appropriate approaches (both manual and automated) for the creation of digital collections metadata for individual projects and ensures the quality of cataloging and digital collections metadata both retrospectively and prospectively, in compliance with local, consortial, and national standards. Required Qualifications: BA/BS required ; 2-3 years technical services/cataloging experience or equivalent education. (Combinations of related education and experience will be considered.) Prior supervisory or training experience Familiarity with bibliographic record formats and standards including MARC, Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), and Library of Congress classification (LCC) Experience with metadata schema and their application, including the ability to effectively apply metadata in traditional and digital library environments, and controlled vocabularies. Familiarity with library software, integrated library systems, and digital collection platforms (e.g. OCLC Connexion, SirsiDynix Symphony WorkFlows, and OCLC CONTENTdm) Proficiency in complex copy cataloging for a variety of formats using the RDA cataloging standard Familiarity with serials cataloging Ability to independently comprehend and apply national and local cataloging standards Ability to independently prioritize and adapt to production schedules, meet deadlines, and achieve goals. Ability to work creatively and independently and as a team member Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills Excellent problem-solving, organization and time management skills Detail-oriented Strong user-centered service orientation Preferred Qualifications : MLS or prior relevant Library Science coursework a plus. Familiarity with authority control and Library of Congress Name Authority File (LCNAF) record creation Proficiency in original cataloging for a variety of formats using the RDA cataloging standard Project management experience Foreign language proficiency is welcomed, but not required in this position. This is a full-time position with normal work hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.Minimum salary is $40,000 per year. Excellent benefits include minimum 14 vacation days, 9 paid holidays, health and dental insurance options, plus enrollment in IU's defined contribution retirement plan. All full-time staff members are also eligible for IU's tuition benefit.
