Job Description and Duties Incumbents in one of these classifications, where a Master's Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master's and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.Under the general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor I Chief of the Violent Injury Prevention Data Unit, the Research Scientist (RS III) functions as the program researcher/evaluator for the Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Program and will serve as the lead on evaluation and performance measurement for the program. The RS III will also conduct public health performance monitoring to identify new and existing potential data sources to track the crisis of suicide, disseminate findings through reports, presentations, and journal articles, plan, design and implement evaluation methods to assess the effectiveness of suicide prevention practices and policies, and provide research-based information to support educational messages and components. The RS III is responsible for the planning, design, testing, and development of research studies, including performance monitoring, and program evaluation related to public health outcomes across California. This requires knowledge and use of scientific research methods, performance monitoring, evaluation methodologies, and scientific analysis of data using appropriate methods and software packages. The RS III may conduct phases of a major scientific project or investigation of sufficient scope to require coordination with professional staff from other State, local, or Federal agencies; publish or present scientific research or investigations conducted to other public health experts and the community; provide interpretations of scientific research findings for use by others; and perform other related work.10% In-state and out-of-state travel may be required, with overnight stays as needed to participate in off-site meetings. IVPB is the focal point for Department efforts in injury and violence prevention, surveillance, and safe physical activity promotion. The Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Program will support local health departments in high-risk counties to implement suicide prevention strategies that include reducing access to lethal means among people at risk via safe storage practices for both firearms and medications, gatekeeper trainings for healthcare providers, and promotion of tele-mental health as a means for reducing provider shortages.
