Job Description Outstanding Registered Nurse Gastroenterology Clinic Opportunity, Joint Base San Antonio Lackland, San Antonio, TX * Excellent Pay & Benefits! * Full Time Position Days, Monday-Friday! * NO Weekends! NO Holidays! NO Call! * PTO! & 10 Paid Federal Holidays! * Malpractice Insurance Provided! ** NOTE: This position is contingent upon contract award. POSITION SUMMARY: The Registered Nurse (RN) shall provide an advanced level of comprehensive professional specialized nursing care to patients with acute or chronic conditions while they are undergoing GI, pulmonary, cardiology, or allergy procedures. Procedures include diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Patient conditions include, but are not limited to Crohn s disease, ulcerative colitis, autoimmune hepatitis, GERD, liver cirrhosis, CAD, CHF, and other heart conditions, COPD, asthma, lung cancer, hypoxia, interstitial lung diseases, dyspnea, pulmonary nodules, syncope, post-operative thoracic, vascular, organ transplant as well as status-post multi-system trauma/organ failure. DUTIES: The duties include but are not limited to the following; * Effectively provides comprehensive safe, efficient, and professional nursing care to patients. * Actively observes post-operative and chronically ill patients and takes appropriate action as indicated by problems to prevent complications and restore or maintain stability. * Independently plans, schedules, and provides comprehensive nursing care and solves problems on own initiative within the nursing scope of practice. * Discusses the needs of the patient, the kind of physical care and personal relationships and behavioral patterns to be enforced and those to be avoided. * Communicates patient progress or lack thereof to physicians and supervisory nursing personnel. * Prepares patients and assists physicians with complex and potentially life-threatening procedures as follows. In the GI clinic the procedures include colonoscopy, endoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, EGD, and hemorrhoid banding. In Pulmonary Clinic will prepare patients for bronchoscopy. In Cardiology Clinic will prepare patients for transesophageal echocardiograms or cardiac CTAs. Initiates conscious sedation and monitors patient s condition before, during and after procedures that require moderate sedation. * Continually observes monitors and assesses patient s condition. Interprets signs and symptoms of deterioration in condition and takes corrective action. * In the absence of a physician, independently determines and implements emergency measures after identifying and interpreting life-threatening conditions. Initiates life-saving measures to include advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This includes such actions as calculating dosages, mixing potent and potentially lethal drugs prior to arrival of the physician and administering these drugs on the physician s directive. * Chronologically records all patient care information in manual or automated record systems. * Provides back-up coverage to Pulmonary and Cardiology Clinic as the secondary or primary nurse. In addition also provides coverage to Allergy and Immunization Clinic administering IVIG when the primary nurse is absent. * Administers conscious sedation; mixes and administers prescribed medications orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intravenously, topically, etc., and knows which drugs will alter the effects of another drug if administered concurrently prior to the admini...
