The Charter Township of Shelby is accepting applications for part-time Mechanical Inspector positions. Duties include performing inspections and reviewing plans to enforce compliance utilizing applicable construction codes, ordinances, and regulations specific to the discipline or disciplines. Qualified candidates must provide proof of the following: High School Diploma or GED equivalent with five (5) years directly related experience OR an associate degree in a related field with two (2) years of directly related experience. Must possess a valid driver's license and driving record without limitation. State of Michigan registration as an Inspector and Plan Reviewer in the mechanical disciplines or have the ability and qualifications to obtain provisional registrations within ninety (90) days of employment. Certification as an Inspector and Plan Reviewer from the International Code Council (ICC) in the applicable discipline(s) is preferred. Current employees without ICC certification(s) are required to actively undertake coursework and testing to obtain the certification(s). Salary: $36.26 per hour. Job Summary : Performs inspections and reviews plans to enforce compliance utilizing applicable construction codes, ordinances, and regulations specific to the discipline or disciplines. Essential Job Functions An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: (These examples do not include fill of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform) Inspects buildings, structures, equipment, and property to enforce compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations. Reviews plans and specifications of buildings, structures, equipment, and sites to enforce compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations. Informs, assists, and advises architects, engineers, developers, contractors, property owners, and the general public with regard to code, ordinance, and regulatory compliance. Investigates and resolves complaints concerning code, ordinance, and regulatory matters. Represents the Building Department before Township Boards and Commissions; State and other public agencies; courts of competent jurisdiction; and other legal authorities with regards to enforcement activities. Prepares and maintains departmental records and reports utilizing departmental computer software. Generates correspondence, violations, court citations, and other related documentation. As required. Operate office technology, such as photocopies and scanners, facsimile machines, telephone and voice mail systems, and computers. Performs duties in compliance with occupational safety and health standards. Assists other staff as needed. Performs related work as required including but not limited to those duties performed by classifications of a lower grade. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities An employee in this class must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application: Knowledge Construction codes, techniques, materials, methods, systems, and equipment Inspection procedures and practices Local government, state, and federal regulations pertaining to construction Skills Using and apply mathematical formulas and principles; tables, charts, scales, and measuring equipment Critical thinking Time management Judgment and decision making Abilities Read, interpret and work with specifications, plans, and other construction documents. Maintain and prepare comprehensive and detailed reports in connection with inspections and plan reviews. Work effectively with the general public and other employees. Employment Status: Part-time FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Experience Required: At least two (2) years of experience with an associate's degree or five (5) years of experience with a high school diploma/GED. Minimum Education Requirements: High School Diploma or GED equivalent with five (5) years directly related experience OR an associate degree in a related field with two (2) years of directly related experience. Certification/Licensing: Must possess a valid driver's license and driving record without limitation, must possess State of Michigan registration as an Inspector and Plan Reviewer in the mechanical discipline, or have the ability and qualifications to obtain provisional registrations within ninety (90) days of employment. To qualify for State of Michigan registration as a mechanical inspector, candidates shall have possessed a mechanical license for not less than 1 year in 3 or more categories listed in Rule 408.30043 Mechanical Inspector: Categories 1, 2, 4, or 9 as defined in 1984 PA 192, MCL 338.971 to MCL 338.988 and known as the Forbes mechanical contractor act as defined. Certification as an Inspector and Plan Reviewer from the International Code Council (ICC) in the applicable discipline(s) is preferred. Current employees without ICC certification(s) are required to actively undertake coursework and testing to obtain the certification(s). Direct Supervisor: Department Head and/or Employee of Higher Classification Supervisory Responsibility: None People Supervised : Direct (0), Indirect (0) Physical Requirements: Must possess good vision and good hearing. Must be able to climb, crawl and possess standard physical mobility.
