GoTriangle , the regional public transportation organization for Wake, Durham, and Orange counties, has an opening for a Mechanic Intern. GoTriangle maintains a fleet of 77 diesel transit buses, 29 paratransit light transit vehicles, and support vehicles. The Internship will provide opportunities for gaining hands on experience with a wide range of maintenance and repair duties. The intern will perform preventative maintenance services and repairs on agency vehicles under the direction of a mechanic to supplement the formal learning obtained as part of the formal curriculum of a local technical/trade school. This is a seasonal/part-time position averaging thirty three (33) hours weekly during the summer work based learning program and no more than thirty (30) hours during the fall/spring semester. The work schedule may be modified to complement candidate's school schedule. The length of this internship may be extended ( i ) based on departmental needs, (ii) available funds and (iii) the intern's own expectations exceeding performance. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Assist with performing preventive maintenance services and repairs on transit vehicles. Use diagnostic equipment and repair manuals to assist with troubleshooting system failures. Provide technical information to transit operations regarding vehicle status. Document work performed, parts and materials used in the computerized maintenance management system. Maintains compliance with all safety rules and regulations. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: This position requires enrollment in a current technical/trade school for vehicle repair. Must be familiar with the use and care of diagnostic equipment and hand tools. Must be able to report to work during Adverse Weather and emergency situations, weekends, holidays, off hour's shifts and occasional emergency overtime. Requires a good driving record and have or be able to obtain a class B Commercial Driver's License with a passenger endorsement and the ability to meet the Department of Transportation's physical requirements and maintain a valid DOT card. The successful candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test and a pre-placement exam/functional assessment test. Ideal candidate will be computer proficient and knowledgeable of OSHA compliance requirements. An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the above stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications. Working Hours and Conditions: Works in an environment where there is minimum exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. Work is normally performed in a typical interior office work environment. Other working conditions may require; precise hand/eye coordination, basic keyboarding and other repetitive motions, operation of vehicles, lifting/pushing objects weighing up to or over 10 pounds. None of very limited physical effort required and none or very limited exposure to physical risk. Salary: $31,200 - $41,600 GoTriangle is an equal opportunity employer.
