Request for Proposals from Consultants Climate Justice Alliance is offering a contract of up to $75,000 for an individual or team to support the alliance in developing a bold, visionary and necessary strategic plan. The Contractor will work with a Strategic Planning Committee made up of staff and members to ensure a clear, creative, and inclusive process. The Contractor’s primary role will be to build the overall design of the Strategic Planning Process in consultation with the Strategic Planning Committee. Location: Remote, within the United States About Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) was formed in 2013 to create a new center of gravity in the climate movement by uniting frontline communities and organizations into a formidable force. Our translocal organizing strategy and mobilizing capacity is building a Just Transition away from extractive systems of production, consumption and political oppression, and towards resilient, regenerative and equitable economies. We believe that the process of transition must place race, gender and class at the center of the solutions equation in order to make it a truly Just Transition. We are a unique alliance of 88 community, frontline, and environmental justice organizations; movement networks; and support organizations at the forefront of climate change. Our members are multicultural, intergenerational, and prioritize leadership among women, gender-oppressed, and persons of color. They come from traditionally underrepresented constituencies, including Indigenous Peoples, African American, Latinx, Asian Pacific Islander, and low-income white communities, often often located near toxic, polluting industries such as oil refineries, fracking wells, coal mines, power plants, and pipelines; rails, ports, and other major transportation corridors; landfills and incinerators; and industrial agriculture. Consultant Criteria and Requirements Who Should Apply: Individuals or teams, preferably connected to CJA members or close allies. Criteria : You should demonstrate through the application and interview: Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge Significant experience collaborating on strategic planning processes and project management experience Experience working with frontline communities Demonstrated solution-oriented approach, high emotional intelligence, and ability to listen deeply to, provide support to, and follow the lead of frontline, community based leaders Excellent writing, speaking, and analytical skills and ability to translate analysis and complex information into persuasive writing and speaking that connect to a larger vision Has a strong understanding of CJA’s Just Transition framework and principles, and a commitment to environmental, economic, social justice, and building pro-Black movements within multiracial spaces. Knowledge of the national landscape of climate/environmental justice a nd ability to think strategically and long-term Ability to allocate adequate time and attention to this contract Preferred Skills, Experience and Knowledge Experience moving policy, experience waging grassroots organizing campaigns, and working with/in frontline communities, understanding of the nexus between policy and organizing Significant research experience Based in frontline and/or under-represented communities Has existing relationships among CJA members Size/Timing of Contract: The contract is capped at $75,000 from July 2024 to March 2025. This amount will go toward your time and any direct costs of completing the project. Consultant Responsibilities: If awarded this contract, you will be responsible for supporting the alliance through the following process. The Strategic Planning Committee and Consultant may revise the specifics as needed. Design a Clear, Consultative, and Engaging Strategic Planning Process: Support Strategic Planning Committee calls throughout the process. Develop and share Visual Representation and Presentation of Strategic Planning Journey. Support Assessment and Collectivizing Lessons Learned: Inform the assessment process and support discussions with various members and staff bodies to glean collective lessons. Support Landing Shared Strategic Goals, Vision and principles: Pulling from the lessons and assessment, identify strategic goals in consultation with relevant member and staff bodies. Facilitate development of Draft Strategic Objectives / Roadmap: Guided by strategic goals, build out a roadmap in consultation with relevant members and staff bodies. Facilitate Finalization and Approval Process: Facilitate rigorous deliberations, revisions, finalizing and vote on a bold and visionary strategic plan. CJA’s responsibilities: CJA’s responsibilities will be to provide resources through a contract or grant to support completion of the project; to provide support and consultation throughout the process; and to provide or connect the consultant to additional resources as mutually agreed upon.
