To quote myriad TNC staff members, "you'll join for our mission, and you'll stay for our people.The Platte River Prairies (PRP) south of Wood River, Nebraska, includes about 3,500 acres of grassland with embedded wetland and woodland habitats. Much of that grassland and wetland habitat has been restored from cropland with high-diversity seed mixes to enlarge and reconnect adjacent remnant (unplowed) prairies. Those prairies are managed with combinations of prescribed fire and cattle grazing, along with invasive species control efforts. The Central Platte River is the annual staging ground for about 1 million migratory sandhill cranes each spring, a spectacle that draws visitors from around the world.Staff at the Platte River Prairies work to promote biological diversity, mitigate climate change and influence land stewardship around Nebraska and beyond. We look for creative and innovative approaches to reach those goals and to translate lessons learned to a broad variety of audiences.WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHERThe Platte River Prairies Land Steward (Land Steward) assists the PRP Preserve Manager with all aspects of restoring and managing habitat, including prescribed fire, cattle grazing (through leases), seed harvest/planting, and a variety of invasive species suppression tactics, including herbicide application. That work supports local species and natural communities, but also provides opportunities for conservation professionals, landowners, and the general public to visit and learn about prairies and various conservation strategies. The Land Steward operates equipment, including trucks, ATVs, UTVs, skid-steers, tractors, mowers, sprayers, and chainsaws. They also maintain and repair that equipment or coordinate with local vendors to do so. The Land Steward builds and repairs fences and other livestock infrastructure and maintains several buildings at the Platte River Prairie headquarters. In addition, they help supervise short-term staff and volunteers, coordinate with neighbors, lessees, and visiting researchers, and assist with field tours, workshops and other events.This position will require work in variable weather conditions, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. We are looking for someone to help us find innovative solutions to land stewardship challenges that can influence conservation in significant and lasting ways.WHAT YOU'LL BRING BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1 year of related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with natural systems. Experience in ecological land management principles. Experience operating and or repairing various types of equipment and machinery.
