Fishery Biologist III
Fishery Biologist III Description: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG), Commercial Fisheries Division, is seeking a Fishery Biologist III within the Mark, Tag, and Age Lab stationed in Juneau, AK. This position will lead the Age Determination Unit (ADU), a statewide age reading lab responsible for ensuring age data production (utilizing otoliths or similar structures) and conducting age related research to support groundfish (e.g., sablefish, rockfishes, and lingcod) and invertebrate (e.g., geoduck) fisheries management. Specifically, this position will ensure age reading production goals, age data quality, supervise age reading staff, and conduct research that will improve age estimation and its utility for fisheries stock assessment. This position will also collaborate with national and international groups to ensure advancements in age related research are incorporated within the ADU. This job requires in- and out-of-state travel (15 " 30 days/year) to attend meetings and to participate in field research activities. The ADU (mtalab.adfg.alaska.gov/ADU/default.aspx) is part of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Mark, Tag, and Age Laboratory located in Juneau, Alaska. The ADU serves fishery managers and researchers statewide by producing age estimates for fish and invertebrate species. Age structures from these species are harvested as part of commercial operations, population surveys, and research projects. Structures are sent to the ADU, where specimens are prepared and growth patterns analyzed. The ADU maintains a large database of over 200,000 specimens representing 39 species with individuals that range in age from zero to 205yrs old. The earliest birth year of a specimen contained in the database is 1795. Data and specimen requests from State, Federal, or other scientific institutions are handled on an individual basis. Biologists at the ADU collaborate with other state, federal and international researchers to standardize and improve age determination methods. Such methods include defining pattern interpretation criteria, exploring age validation studies, assessing the utility of age structure morphometrics, and quality control evaluations. The ADU documents interpretation of growth patterns, development of new techniques, or other pertinent age and growth related work through presentations, reports, peer reviewed manuscripts, posters, or other technical documents. Min Requirements: ADFG is looking for a Fishery Biologist who has demonstrated some or all of the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and background (All of the following traits must be documented in your introductory letter and candidate profile). Ã¢¢ Expertise to plan, supervise, manage, and report on large and complex research projects, some of which have national or international implications Ã¢¢ Background with data production facilities and laboratory protocols and procedures Ã¢¢ Background analyzing, interpreting, or producing age data Ã¢¢ Extensive background working with large datasets and/or databases Ã¢¢ Current understanding of the theories, principles, concepts, methods, procedures, and techniques of marine fisheries science including age estimation, growth and physiology, bioenergetics, fisheries oceanography, and marine ecology Ã¢¢ Strong organizational and leadership skills Ã¢¢ Demonstrated skill fostering collaborative relationships Ã¢¢ Strong oral and writing expertise for the presentation of fisheries research to science and non-science audiences Ã¢¢ Background with preparing reports and publishing manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals Ã¢¢ Background with writing proposals to granting organizations for external funds Min Requirements: A bachelorÃ¢s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management; AND One Year of full performance professional level biologist background. The required professional biologist work background is met by service as a Fishery Biologist II, Wildlife Biologist II, Habitat Biologist II, or Fisheries Geneticist I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer. Substitution: A bachelorÃ¢s degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field: Ã¢¢ at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which sixteen semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and Ã¢¢ at least twelve semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of 2 or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS. Special Note: Ã¢Upper division coursesÃ¢ means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a disciplineÃ¢s theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher. Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
