Editorial Assistant for PS: Political Science
An intern for the Journal Publishing office will have an excellent opportunity to further his/her editorial and communication expertise, learn about the operation of scholarly peer-reviewed journals, increase editorial and publishing skills, and gain knowledge about the programs and activities of the largest political science association in the world. Job summary Responsibilities: The intern will work directly with the Managing Editor of PS: Political Science and Politics , a quarterly research journal as well as the "journal of record" of the association's activities. Specific duties include providing technical support in manuscript tracking, editorial support in manuscript preparation and production; interacting with APSA staff in gathering news and announcements for Association News and People sections of PS: Political Science and Politics , and drafting manuscripts and gathering photographs and permissions for these sections of the quarterly journal. Specific duties include: Review manuscript submissions, complete technical checks, send authors and reviewers reminders Complete copyedit "1st pass" of accepted manuscripts Solicit, review, and prepare manuscript copy for Association News, People sections of PS; solicit photographs, permissions and approvals for "spotlights" Proofread Association News, People, and other back-of-issue sections; distribute proofs for review; compile master correctionsCore Competencies Necessary to Job Performance: The ideal intern will be an undergraduate or graduate student in English, journalism, or communications. The intern will be an independent worker who demonstrates attention to detail with excellent management skills, and the expertise to multitask and meet very specific deadlines. Specific skill requirements are: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft office suite and Adobe; especially Ms word's Track Changes features; InDesign CS6.5, a plus Proofreading skills following standard proofreader's marks and copyediting following Chicago Manual of Style, sixteen th ed., and house style guide Strong writing skillsTerms of Employment: We currently seek an undergraduate or graduate student intern to work part-time during the 2013-14 academic year. The perfect applicant will work at APSA national headquarters 10-15 hours/week from October 2013 to June 2014 with the possibility of extension, allowing for exam and holiday schedules. Compensation dependent on student status.
