JOB SUMMARY The Department of Public Works (DPW) Golf Cart Lead Technician performs daily maintenance of the rented golf cart fleet, supervises the DPW Golf Cart Technicians, and provides hospitable, service-oriented support to all users. This role is primarily based in the Golf Cart Shop on site. They will also work remotely within the event site when called for mobile repairs, breakdowns, or maintenance during the event and will assist with Golf Cart clean-up and returns post-event. This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is: From August - September : Full-Time , Non-Exempt , based in Black Rock City, Nevada . The deadline to apply for this role is 5:00 pm Pacific on May 1, 2024 DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Daily Operations (80%): Report any misuse or damage of the golf carts to the Golf Cart Manager. Enter maintenance and repair reports into designated software processes. Safely equip all golf carts with adequate lighting and other required equipment. Perform regular maintenance checks and repairs on a fleet of golf carts to ensure they are in optimal working condition throughout the event. This includes inspecting electrical systems, brakes, tires, and other components. Conduct thorough safety inspections on golf carts to meet Burning Man's safety standards and regulations. Diagnose and troubleshoot any issues that arise with golf carts promptly. Collaborate with other departments to coordinate the transportation of equipment and materials using golf carts as needed. Interact with Burning Man staff in a friendly and professional manner, assisting with golf cart-related inquiries and ensuring a positive experience for all. Work closely with fellow technicians, event staff, and volunteers to coordinate repair schedules, share expertise, and foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. Oversee the golf cart technicians' work, being available for assistance or answering questions. Provide “after-hours” urgent repair services as part of the on-call tech team while on shift. Remove all added equipment from carts, detail and prepare for return to the vendor. Track all golf carts and ensure all are returned to the vendor in the same condition we received them. Assist with Golf Cart returns and clean up in Reno post-event. Leadership (15%) Promote environmentally friendly practices in the maintenance and operation of golf carts, including proper disposal of waste materials and adherence to Burning Man's Leave No Trace principles. Contribute to team meetings and training sessions to enhance collective skills and knowledge. Act as a helpful and transparent intermediary for involved departments, managers, agencies, and vendors. Reasonably and creatively assist staff and vendors with problem-solving efforts and alternate solutions. Work with the Golf Carts Manager to actively participate in the correct allocation of resources and assist Burning Man departments to stay within budget and on time. Commit to improving and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for assigned projects throughout the season for accuracy. Effectively manages own time, individuals, and the efforts of the team as a whole to create an environment of accountability, collaboration, and flexibility of focus in the crew. Be prepared to operate safely and sober at all times during working hours. Adhere to safety protocols and regulations at all times to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace. Prepare written feedback for the Golf Carts Manager describing the season's successes, areas for improvement, and suggestions for next year; submit an end-of-season EMBER Report. Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%) Attend and support department Morning Meetings. Work with the Business Operations Teams to plan and execute LNT and Waste stream plans. Be familiar with, understand, and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols, and behavioral standards. Perform other duties as assigned. LEARNING AND TEACHING Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties. Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes. Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested. Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages, and inspires their team. QUALIFICATIONS Required Flexibility to work irregular hours and weekends for the duration of the event production cycle, including the Burning Man event. A positive attitude and willingness to adapt to the unique culture and atmosphere of Burning Man. Able to safely lift up to 60 lbs. of golf carts, related supplies, crates and equipment and repeatedly climb up on trucks. Extensive knowledge of small engine repair or maintenance. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Clear, service-oriented and professional communication, verbally and through written correspondence with a customer-oriented approach. Experienced with using 2 way radios and following radio protocol. Able to embody proactive, present and responsive leadership qualities for a diverse team while still maintaining firm boundaries and adhering to set standards. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Operates with a high level of behavioral integrity and discretion of sensitive information; maintains tidiness in work ethics and the work environment. Able to receive and integrate feedback into action, remain calm and focused under pressure and emergency situations, and maintain a respectful demeanor that leads by example. Capacity to identify tasks and initiate execution with minimal direction. Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times. Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada. Preferred Proven experience as a golf cart technician or similar role. Familiarity with golf cart brands/models commonly used at events like Burning Man is preferred. It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture. Familiarity with DPW. REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS Valid driver’s license and a good driving record COMPENSATION Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position: From August - September is $15.75 - $18.25 per hour . PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT Off-playa: Work is primarily standing and bending while cleaning and restoring Golf Carts to original status. This happens in Reno and away from the extremes of the playa. On-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
