Epworth United Methodist Church Toledo, OhioHome to a Diverse Congregation Seeking a Relationship with Christwww.Epworth.com Position Description: DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN & FAMILY MINISTRY- May 16, 2024 Overview: The Director of Children & Family Ministry serves full-time to assist the church in accomplishing its mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The Director of Children & Family Ministry ensures that Epworths ministry to children and families is sustainably structured, aligned with our mission and vision, and executed with excellence. Qualifications and Characteristics: Degree in Education, Christian Education, Christian Ministry, or related field. Experience in developing, implementing, and leading Christian discipleship programs for children and their families Passion and vision for ministry with children and families that engenders excitement and leads to spiritual growth. Experience in designing and maintaining volunteer systems. Effective administrative and communication skills. Authenticity and integrity that reflect the Fruits of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Responsibilities: The Director of Children & Family Ministry will work to ensure a high quality and innovative faith formation program for children (preschool through 6th grade) and their families.Develop the Children & Family Ministry programs of the church to ensure effectiveness in promoting the mission and vision of Epworth UMC. Oversee and evaluate current Children & Family Ministry programs to include Sunday School, Vacation Bible Camp, periodic childrens events, and develop new opportunities as needs are assessed. Select materials and oversee the development and execution of all children and family ministries (current offerings listed below). Prepare and maintain the annual budget for Children & Family Ministry to be included in the church budget. Work with Epworth staff to maintain a system to track and manage children, families, and volunteers associated with the Children & Family Ministry. Work with volunteers in the curriculum selection process ensuring that selections are consistent with our United Methodist and Wesleyan traditions and theology. Recruit, train, equip and supervise a Children & Family Ministry volunteer team. Recruit and maintain a robust team of volunteers through training, equipping, and supporting their ministry with children and families. Communicate with volunteers and staff regarding event logistics and support. Ensure implementation of the Safe Sanctuaries Policy. Recruit, train and supervise, maintain, and support Nursery staff. Have the Staff Parish Relations Committee endorse all new Nursery staff persons. Facilitate opportunities for families to grow in faith together. Work collaboratively to create opportunities for parents and families to connect with one another through activities (e.g. parents night out, family dinners, etc.) Provide support and resources to parents in order to assist them in nurturing the faith development of their children. Provide leadership and consultation for churchwide/seasonal events that are child/family-centered (Lent, Advent, and Picnics.) Communicate regularly with children and families to build relationships, offer support, and give encouragement. Keep families engaged and informed through weekly emails and/or other avenues of communication to include the monthly church newsletter. Coordinate outreach efforts to invite and welcome new children and their families. Create and maintain an environment of acceptance and inclusivity so that children of all backgrounds and abilities experience Epworth and the love of God. Serve as a liaison with Epworth Childrens Learning Center to provide support and offer Christian Education resources (chapel, curriculum, classroom visits) Develop evangelistic opportunities and events to welcome and invite children and families in the churchs surrounding neighborhood to participate in Children & Family Ministry programs. Advocate for Children & Family Ministries in the whole ministry of the church. Represent Children & Family Ministry at staff meetings and work collegially with staff. Provide reports to the Church Council to keep church leadership apprised of Children & Family Ministry news and updates. Support and coordinate childrens music ministry leaders. Work with the Associate Pastor to offer intergenerational ministry opportunities. Coordinate with worship leadership to engage children in opportunities for worship leadership. The Director of Children & Family Ministry is the primary leader of the following programs, though new programs may need to be created in the course of this ministry: Children Sunday School (Childrens MinistrySunday, 3rd Grade Bibles) Childrens Mission support Childrens Church Vacation Bible Camp Miscellaneous: Performs other duties as agreed upon by the incumbent, the Senior Pastor and the Staff Parish Relations Committee.Reporting Relationships: The Director of Children & Family Ministry reports to the Senior Pastor and has the following direct reports: Nursery Coordinator Nursery Staff Attends the following Team and Committee meetings and assists with developing meeting agendas beforehand Children and Family Ministry Action Team Church Council Weekly Staff Meeting Annual Planning Retreat Annual Church Conference Other education and children ministry related workshops and seminars as the budget allows. Problem Resolution. The Director of Children and Family Ministry is responsible for resolving problems at the lowest possible level. Should the incumbent experience any difficulty during problem resolution, the incumbent is expected to seek functional assistance from the Senior Pastor or appropriate ministry team leaders. If this should fail, the incumbent may bring the issue to the attention of the entire Staff-Parish Relations Committee membership. Participates in an annual job performance review. This position description is subject to annual review and revision according to the needs and the ministries of the church. Any changes to this position description must be approved by the Epworth Staff/Parish Relations Committee and formally incorporated into this position description.A successful background check will be required as a condition of employment.
