Description:
Position Overview: Assesses inpatient and outpatient nutrition requirements and nutrition and/or diabetes education needs and develops and provides Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Collaborates and communicates nutrition and/or diabetes interventions and goals to other care team members. Works with the food services staff to coordinate food and diet orders that meet quality standards and patient nutritional requirements. Provides the staff, physicians and community with evidenced based nutrition and diabetes information. Provides quality patient care and services. Essential Functions : a) Assess needs and provides MNT to inpatients and outpatients according to evidenced based guidelines and policies b) Provides diabetes education based on the 10 content areas specified by ADA (includes glucometer, and insulin teaching) c) Collaborates and communicates with physicians, staff, patients and families to meet the patient MNT and/or diabetes goals. d) Schedules, documents and bills per policy e) Provides community nutrition and diabetes education when requested in the form of classes, health fairs, articles, etc f) Provides support to food service operations through education on diet and food safety issues, and collaboration on inpatient needs g) Supports the department and hospital in quality improvement and department specific projects Physical Demands and Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands along with fingers, to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Qualifications & Skills: a) Education: BS or MS in Nutrition and Dietetics; RD or RD eligible and pass exam within 6 months b) Training & Experience: One year experience in clinical nutrition preferred (1 year required for dialysis) c) Job Knowledge Nutrition: Encompasses a wide range of disease states and appropriate nutrition therapy. It includes the ability to assess patients of all ages, provide individualized nutrition intervention and education, and communicate with families, physicians and staff. d) Job Knowledge Diabetes: Encompasses a good knowledge base of the 10 content areas of diabetes education. This includes the ability to assess the patient's learning needs, provide education and communicate with families, physicians and staff. CDE desirable e) Job Knowledge General: Knowledge of how to access information from the computer, journals, and textbooks as well as how to network with other team members is essential.
