Job Title: Chief Economist Division: External Affairs Department: Policy Reports To: Managing Vice President, Policy FLSA Status/Level: Exempt/Vice President Position Overview: The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) is seeking a Chief Economist . The Chief Economist serves as a key advisor, economic expert and research lead for the NAM and its members. The Chief Economist has an important external role in showing the trends in manufacturing and dissecting economic indicators. In addition, the Chief Economist leads the development and delivery of the research agenda of the Manufacturing Institute (MI), the NAM's workforce development and education affiliate. Day-to-Day Responsibilities: Designing and executing original research via quarterly industry surveys, Working with outside advisors on specific research topics, including developing ideas with NAM staff, assisting in negotiating contracts, participating in regular meetings on the status of contracted research, reviewing methodology and providing input on deliverables, Communicating with NAM members, prospective members and external stakeholders on the economic outlook for the manufacturing industry both globally and domestically through a variety of means, including written materials and virtual and in-person presentations, Providing weekly reports on economic indicators to NAM members, Serving as a spokesperson in the media for the manufacturing industry as needed, Managing up to two direct reports, and In conjunction with NAM leadership, developing data on issues impacting the manufacturing industry generally and the NAM's advocacy agenda specifically on an as-needed basis. For the MI, working with key consulting firm partners to produce an ongoing series of reports on the manufacturing workforce in coordination with MI's Chief Program Officer and supported by the MI's Senior Manager of Workforce Insights. Also for the MI, leading the development of in-house research to support the MI's portfolio of workforce programs, solutions, and policies. This person will also be responsible for leading and working closely with key internal stakeholders, including government relations (to ensure consistency and effectiveness in NAM representation before policymakers), membership (to identify issues and communicate updates on priority items), and public affairs and marketing (to inform NAM advocacy campaigns, demonstrate value to our membership on assigned issues and identify opportunities to enhance NAM's public-facing work). The successful candidate has a track record of success in economic analysis, research and management within an advocacy organization. Candidate should be able to analyze and communicate complex issues clearly and succinctly to a variety of audiences. Experience with public speaking, including engagement with the media, is preferred. Key responsibilities include working proactively and collaboratively with policy experts and internal groups to develop data to inform policymakers. In this role, the Chief Economist will work closely with key leaders at the NAM's 14,000 member companies to identify emerging trends, track key metrics and spot research opportunities, while communicating with internal and external stakeholders about data relevant to the manufacturing industry and ensuring that the NAM is responsive to the needs of manufacturers. To accomplish this mission, the Chief Economist will be expected to regularly travel to meetings with manufacturers. The Chief Economist will also dedicate approximately 25% of their time to leading and managing the MI's research portfolio. This will require active coordination with the MI's Chief Program Officer on the purpose and strategy of the MI's research agenda. It will also necessitate a close working relationship with the MI's Senior Manager of Workforce Insights to manage and produce the MI's in-house research and coordinate with outside partners. Travel may be required for the MI, but it will be limited. Maintain a learning culture that adapts to the changing political landscape and policy developments. Complete work with the highest ethical standards. Interdepartmental Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the other departments within the NAM to ensure alignment with overall organizational goals and objectives. Contribute to a spirit of teamwork and shared purpose among department members that allows for open communication, appreciation of diversity of viewpoints and perspectives and cohesiveness. Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has two total direct reports. Qualifications: A minimum of 15+ years of related experience at a policymaking body (e.g., Capitol Hill, the Executive Branch), a business trade association or academia. Exceptional understanding of economic analysis, including demonstrated experience in survey design and use of modeling tools. Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written. Proven ability to work effectively in a fast paced, quality and goal-driven environment.
