Department: Building Services Reports to: Building Maintenance Supervisor Summary : Under basic supervision, performs general carpentry work in the construction, maintenance and repair of City buildings for the Building Services Department (BSD); remodels, repairs, and maintains buildings and structures according to work orders and building codes. Essential Functions : -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. This is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by incumbents of this class; employees may be assigned duties which are not listed below; reasonable accommodations will be made as required. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following : Performs general carpentry work in the remodeling, maintenance, and repair of City buildings; reads and interprets plans, specifications, and instructions. Evaluates work orders for assigned projects, identifies materials and equipment required, and determines appropriate carpentry techniques; performs construction, maintenance and repairs within scope of authority, and in accordance with all safety regulations and BSD procedures; notifies supervisor of safety hazards, equipment problems, and emergency situations. Must have and maintain a cell phone for City use to hold this position Subject to overtime assignments when required Supports the departmental operations with regular and timely attendance. Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED required; AND four years of carpentry and building maintenance experience, preferably with the City of Odessa. Knowledge of: City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions. Materials, equipment, and tools used in constructing, repairing, and maintaining buildings. Skill in: Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner. Following verbal and written instructions and procedures, and BSD safety standards. Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers. Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. License and certification requirements: A valid Texas State Driver's License is required; journey level experience in skilled building trades is preferred. Physical demands and working environment: Work is performed in City facilities; requires ability to bend, reach, stoop and lift objects; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment.
