Northwest Youth Corps - AmeriCorps Member (450 hours) Bureau of Land Management - Burns District Office Hines, Oregon Position Title: Invasive Plant Species Treatment Monitoring Natural Resources Specialist Grant Program: OYSI 22EDBDC0020010 / EAP 21EDBDC0010041 Position Summary: Burns District BLM is recruiting one AmeriCorps members beginning June 15th, 2024. The intern is expected to consult with internal resource staff on monitoring needs related to noxious weeds; using this information, they will work to plan a season of field work, conduct field data collection, and use current and historical data to produce a report on noxious weed site conditions within the district; results of the report will be presented to resource staff and managers. Duties and Responsibilities: Perform resource inventory, monitoring, and surveys for invasive plant species. Work requires the incumbent to spend time performing both office and field work. Specific activities include: Inventory, monitor and map plant populations (50%) Inspect and monitor on-going noxious weed spray projects (30%) In office filing, planning, and coordination (10%) Off-site training (5%) Cross train by assisting other resource specialists (5%) *Percentages describe the estimated amount of time expected on each task, and are an AmeriCorps requirement* Required Qualifications: Applicants must be currently pursuing either an associates, bachelors, or graduate degree. Degree field of study: Biology, Botany, Range Management, Animal Science, Environmental Science, Soil Science, Wildlife Biologist, Natural Resources, Ecology, Agricultural Sciences, Crop Science, Fisheries Biologist, Riparian Science, Conservation Science, Fire Science, Weed Science. US Citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts. Must be at least 18 years of age upon start date. Experience working as a team and individually Ability to quickly learn identification of noxious plants basic Microsoft Office programs skills to organize/write reports Global Information System (GIS) map programs experience Experience navigating using paper or electronic maps / GPS Ability to work in remote areas with few services Hiking long distances on uneven terrain in hot or cold temperatures. CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED Valid driver's license Desired Qualifications: Active Oregon spray handlers license Ability to identify noxious weeds. Duty Location: Duties are performed within Burns Bureau of Land Management (BLM) District Office. Terms of Employment : One AmeriCorps member will complete an 11-week term of service (450 hours), starting June 15th, 2024 through August 31st, 2024. The member must complete a minimum of 450 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours. Program Benefits : $7,040 living allowance with a $3,000 housing stipend for a total combined stipend of $10,040 dispersed on a monthly basis throughout the term of service. The member will have available a $1,000 reimbursement fund for gear, mileage, and training relevant to the position. Upon successful completion of program requirements, an education award amount of $1,824.07 is awarded to the member. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
