CITY OF SOUTH SALT LAKE POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Description: ANIMAL SHELTER TECHNICIAN II Department: Neighborhoods Position Grade: 16 Supervisor: ANIMAL SERVICES SUPERVISOR FLSA Status: Non-exempt Revision Date: April 2023 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSITION SUMMARY The Animal Shelter Technician II works under the direction of the Animal Services Supervisor within the Department of Neighborhoods. Technician II provides advanced level hygiene and healthcare services for animals in a shelter setting. The Technician II assists shelter operations in animal care, recovery, and adoption. South Salt Lake is a no-kill shelter and part of the Best Friends Animal Society Network. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Performs duties to care for the health and well-being of animals. Cleans the animal shelter, including kennels, cages, and animal areas daily. Cares for animals, including feeding, walking, moving to outdoor pens, socializing, cleaning, etc. Performs animal intake examinations, checking for signs of illness, distress, and injury. Provides emergency first aid to animals. Assesses need to seek veterinary care for cases that require serious intervention. Monitors the health of animals and provides care such as medications, rehabilitation, and wound care. Administers vaccines. Euthanizes animals, only as necessary. Trains and socializes animals to improve their successful transition to adoption. Prepares and supervises facilities for public use. Opens and closes, locks, and unlocks facilities and sets security alarms. Arranges facilities for special events; sets up and takes down tables and chairs. Maintains security during center activities. Communicates with building users and renters, responds to requests and provides good customer service. Provides good customer service to building users and renters. Assists in animal shelter operations. Maintains records relating to the shelter, euthanization, licenses, impounds, adoptions, animal pickup. Staffs the animal shelter front desk and provides quality customer service to visitors. Assists with shelter supplies, animal food, and equipment. Directs the tasks of volunteers and community service workers assisting at the shelter. Works with others to complete tasks as requested by the Department Director. Works as a team to complete complex or large projects. Works with volunteers and community service workers. Completes other duties as assigned. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent plus two years related education or experience, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience required. Veterinarian Tech certificate and training preferred. Certification for euthanasia recommended but not required. NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Skill in managing various sizes and species of animals in different states, including aggressive behavior and ill health. Skill in handling animals safely, without causing undue harm to animals or others assisting. Skill in administering medicines, vaccinations, wound care, and hygiene procedures. Skill in customer service and relating to people in stressful situations. Skill in using independent judgment and analyzing situations and making appropriate decisions. Skill in following Standard Operating Procedures to ensure human and animal welfare. Knowledge of veterinary best practices, animal health and animal behavior. Knowledge of computers and software, including internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, and shelter operations software. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to clean and sanitize animal living spaces, which requires lifting, bending and strength. Ability to physically manage and control an animal in a variety of settings and while providing care. Ability to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and special events. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
